Steve Marriott: Live in Concert

I DON'T NEED NO DOCTOR
IT COULD HAVE TOUCHED AND HAVE SUNG BETTER THIS SONG
AS WELL AS IT DID IT IN FILLMORE EAST

MARRIOTT LIVES ON
I was fortunate enough to catch the U.K.'s premier blues shouter fronting Humble Pie twice (The Capital Centre - April 10, 1980 and The Bayou - March 04, 1981). Steve and the boys torn it up in both the arena and the club. It just didn't matter. Sad to say, all 3 (Steve, The Cap Centre, and The Bayou) are now gone. The good news is that he (along with Jim Leverton and Jerry Shirley as The Packet Of Three) was captured live in '85 at the Camden Palace Theatre in London powering through a 9 song set that serves as an excellent record of the power of Marriott. R.I.P. Steve, you'll by sorely missed.

Excellent Live Show
Excellent live show from the late, great, former Humble Pie and Small Faces frontman. This is a 1985 concert from Steve's Packet of Three band which was a power trio that toured Europe from 1983 to 1987. Steve along with Bassist Jim Leverton and former Humble Pie Drummer Jerry Shirley put on an excellent show that rocks from beginning to end. The video quality is excellent and the 5.1 mix is superb. The only negative is that concert clocks in at only about 47 minutes although there is a 15 minute interview with Steve also included. Sadly, Steve passed away in a house fire in 1991 at the age of 44 just as he was beginning to work with Peter Frampton to reform Humble Pie. After seeing this video I think you will agree that Steve was an extraordinary talent who is sadly missed. Songs: What Ya Gonna Do About It, Fool For A Pretty Face, Shame, Shame, Shame, All Or Nothing, Five Long Years, 30 Days In The Hole, I Don't Need No Doctor, Walking The Dog, and Tin Soldier.

Trash

Impressive Independent Film
I was really impressed with this film. It is a story about poor families and troubled kids in the deep South. Jeremy Sisto is an incredible actor with the kind of range that Tom Hanks (who has played a retarded guy, a lawyer with AIDS, an astronaut, a castaway), Sally Field (who played a textile worker, a girl with multiple personalities, and an assortment of devoted moms)and Jodie Foster (who played a rape victim, a federal agent, the mom of a gifted child, and many other very diverse roles) have. Sisto has played Jesus in the mini, Vassago the Satanist in Hideaway, a he/she in The Crew (which I watched recently on Showtime and was totally shocked and stupefied and thrilled with the performance) and now he completely shifts gears again in Trash as a very hard headed, hot tempered teenager who suffers with a lot of problems. Two friends named Sonny and Michael just lost their buddy who got shot in the head by accident. They can't seem to cope with the grisley death, so as time goes by, Sonny loses his grip while Michael struggles to keep Sonny's feet on the ground. This is a very authentic production, shot in Florida, and most of the cast is unknowns, exept Sisto, who is barely getting to be known (he is on Six feet under now).
I didn't think the ending needed to be so violent. That little boy with Down's syndrome was so cute, but why did he have to be shot and killed? It didn't add to the story a bit. Otherwise, the rest of the movie was brilliant to put it lightly.

A wonderful surprise for all the wrong reasons.
I rented this video because I am a fan of Brian Krause (Leo Wyatt of Charmed). As his name does not appear in the credits on the box, I suspected that his role would be small. In fact, he was only on screen a few minutes, and I don't recall ever seeing his face (I recognized him by his voice). However, I was by no means disappointed with my choice.

The story is engaging. I have always been drawn into literary works which deal with male bonding and its accompanying issues. The two principal characters; Sonny and Anthony, come from broken homes. Each struggles to survive in the wake of a tragic accident which claimed the life of a close friend. Additionally, each of these young men is searching to find a place for himself in a hostile reality in which the local entertainment consists of street brawling, mugging, car-jacking, and making out with the rich girls from across the tracks.

Anthony; a promising young writer, recognizes that remaining in his present environment would condemn him to a life barely worth living. However, his efforts to escape are hampered by the financial insolvency of his widowed working mother, and his best friend who fears that there is no place in the world for "white trash" like him, except exactly where he is.

Jeremy Sisto is extraordinary in the role of Sonny. He is strikingly attractive, his voice is commanding, and he has a screen presence which is irrestible. I cannot recommend this film too highly.

Heart-wrencing story about family, not biological, external.
This is a fantastic movie. The story is well written and the cast is amazing!

The movie is about a group of childhood friends and the lives they live "on the other side of the track". It's an emotional roller-coaster ride that explodes upon social class differences, emotional abandonment, the bonds of ever-lasting friendship and the sacrifices one will make for another in the hope for them to live a better life.

It's a must see!

Ligers frist tranformations and Leena's Debision gets bashed
Kabbom! Throw in a mrechinery , a Jagger and Schinder, An mystriouse zoid, Leena's Bision getting totaled, and the tiger's teram auctaly winning and you got yourself a good video. In order to beat Bic and "Win" Leena Jach hieres Mrechinary Jack there was some funny music in the background when Harrygused the suit so Jack has this battle plan wich he tricked Harry Champ:make the Giant Turtelse shoot the Blitz team and Ligting Siaix rush them. But Liger tranformed into the super fast Jagger and Strike Laser Claw! and he trouble for Bic is how can he payback Doc? Some preety funny syuff in the episode! Leena's Bision got bashed and Not even the combine power of the Vipers and Blitz can't stop the Elephander. The Terrace is down, The Comand Wolf taking damage And Jagger units attaching to the Liger. The Four episodes hve Liger when it's transform. But the chaose dosn't end there. The Sand Stingers attacked the team's cargo bay so all the ziods had to go off and hold off the Stingers. Leon then comforts Niomi, some romance is giong on! Leena's new gunSnipper unleshed the Total Assouat atack and are in bad shape so they can't go to the local town's Zoids competition. Bic was trying out new Schinder parts on Liger but Bic couldn't contorl him during a battle. The Tigers team had a 14 winning streak due to a weathring device on Doc's rival Shark carrier or whatever it's called.
Bic finaly regians controll of Schinder.
What made this video sort of bad is that they kept on sahowing the intro and ending gfor each 4 part ep on this video. If they made the intro a lot more better then saying what is Ziods about which gets annoying a lot of times.
Very Eciting, Romacti, Acition, Bashing and Vloent stuff. This Video is less then perferct it's prettyu Good for people like Bic Cloud and Harrychamp , who always loses when he challenges the Liger even with Jack.

AN AWSOME ACTION PACKED SET OF EPISODES!
This tape has great and action packed episodes like "The Desert Gang" and "The Dark Giant" featuring the super Zoid Elephander. These episodes also introduce two of the three new types of Liger Zero,Jager, and Shneider. These episodes also have some pretty funny parts. So I reccomend this tape to anyone who likes exciting episode. Get the popcorn and Pepsi it's starting.

Zoids-High Speed Battle
These episodes are great! As you can see the 2 zoids(ligerzero and lighting saix)which the episode is featured.Vol.2 features the(main)episode The High Speed Battle:Transforming in zero Jager. In this episode Harry Champ hiers Jack Cisco to help him beat the Blitz team.Of course Harry was a lucky guy to win Jack's game(which is drawing the card and guessing which suit it is).Harry's team lost thanks to the Ligerzero Jager. Also in this episode Bit finds out about the new parts for his Liger. Also you have the episodes The Dark Gaint:invincible Elephander which Leena's zoid is totaled,The Desert Gang:the Hover Cargo's in Danger which Leena gets a Gun Sniper and attacked by the Sand Stingray Gang, and Invasion of The Fierce Tigers:Tranform to Zero Schnider which in this episode the Zabers meet their savior and get the strom unit.Your pretty lucky if you get this since you see the first episodes in which the Liger tranforms. The only thing you don't see is tranfroming into Panzer.Believe me, you should get this amazing, exceting, funny and just cool Vol.

Alien Adventure (3-D) (Large Format)
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (16 October, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Ben Stassen
Starring: John Boyle
Without question, 3-D technology has come a long way since the days of red and green cardboard glasses, and Alien Adventure offers ample proof. This roughly 30-minute feature--also available in The Ultimate 3-D Collection, which includes two other films and the H3D "i-glasses" hardware needed to generate the 3-D imaging--tells the story of alien pioneers inadvertently discovering Earth through a high-tech amusement park. The story is mindless, but the sense of depth conveyed here is quite convincing, especially during the many point-of-view sequences. The image and color resolution of the digital animation leaves much to be desired, however, proving unrewarding in 2-D.

That said, certain sequences shine, most notably a lengthy slide through an arctic wonderland of vast nighttime icescapes and narrow roads through head-spinning chasms. The sound is well above average, enhancing the sense of real-life depth with seamless DTS surround mixes that work well even in headphones. --Michael Mikesell

Fun in 2D; GREAT in 3D
Although I did not see this when it was shown in IMAX theaters, I can just imaging how great this must have been on the huge screen, since it looks very impressive on my 53-inch screen! The basic scenario is that a spaceship lands a scouting party on Earth, but in a soon-to-be-opened high-technology theme park, not a major city. Assuming this to be representative of Earth culture, the landing party splits up and enters four of the pavilions and take the rides. These range from simulator rides (like Star Tours™) to looping coasters. This is CG animation taken at least one step beyond "Toy Story" where you become part of the action. When watched in 2D in a darkened room, you can feel the dips, drops, and hard turns in each of the rides. When watched in 3D (using an optional 3D system) you can even get a little queasy. My only complaint is that this is fairly short at just over 35 minutes; however, there is a "making of" featurette, the original trailer, and a gallery of pictures in 2D and 3D. Oh, and it features great 5:1 audio as well.

Amazing 3d
Amazing DTS surround sound and stunning computer graphics easliy make this title the best dvd I own. Hats off to the design team, I can not wait for additional similar titles to be released.

p.s. skip the 3d horror collection - horrible sounds,
3d effects and story.

Bears
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (26 February, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Average review score:

Beautiful, informative film
"Bears" takes the viewer into the wilds of many areas of the world to get up-close views of these majestic animals. Like most IMAX films, there is a (fairly seamless) mix of both wild and captive animals; the captive animals are used to get shots that would simply be impossible or unsafe to obtain using wild animals in their habitats. The "making of" featurette very clearly explains this process, and it works well in most IMAX films. There were a few times when it was apparent that the black bears being used were "performing," but it was not a huge distraction from the film.

The movie is filmed in beautiful locations, really showcasing the bears' adaptation to their environments, and making crystal clear what an important part they are of the natural world. The viewer is educated on bear behavior, bear/human interaction, habitat conservation, bear awareness and safety precautions, and many other issues, all the while treating our eyes to spectacular views captured with the IMAX camera, which is unparalleled.

A great movie, highly recommended.

The grace and shear strength of Bears
Documentary Film made for IMAX theatre. The Back of the box says this:
{Discover the world of bears and experience a fascinating encounter with one of nature's most inspiring and misunderstood creatures. From a past steeped in mythology to a future shrouded in uncertainty, this film contains stunning footageof these enterprising omnivores in the full glory of their varied natural habitats. Come closer than ever before to polar bears on the Arctic tundra, black bears in Montana and grizzlies in Alaska as they struggle to raise their cubs, and most importantly, to survive in an increasingly human-dominated world.}

The Bonus features of this DVD include: *Bear Wars *Wild on the set *Making of Featurette *Bears of the World Interactivity

Directed y David Lickley.

Well I hope this was helpful.

Beethoven Violin Concerto & Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1 & Mozart Violin Concerto No. 3 / Yehudi Menuhin
Released in DVD by Emi Distribution (06 May, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Yehudi Menuhin
Average review score:

More black and white footage from the vaults!
The Mozart and Bruch are among the most romantic concertos in the entire repitoire and I like Menuhin for the mushy stuff and not so much for the virtuoso stuff. He has the elegance of Kreisler but not so much the demonic technique of Heifetz, Rabin, or Kogan. I do consider this video worthwhile.

DVD includes:

Beethoven Concerto with Colin Davis (1962)
Mozart 3 directed by Menuhin (1967)
Bruch 1 with Fricsay (1961)
Beethoven Romance in F with Adrian Boult (1966)

As far as I know these are the only videos you can get of the Mozart and Bruch, an invaluable study aide if you are a violinist...

He Plays like an Angel
Menuhin plays like an angel. He invites you to communicate with him heart and soul the whole time he plays. Here, or in fact anytime at all, he played the Mozart Concerto somewhat like Hassid: not just every note talks like a human, they're cries and weeps and moans from the deepest of one's soul.

The way Menuhin played his Beethoven is probaby the most difficult one, especially the cadenza. It's more than 3 dimensional: so full of colours and emotions, even more condensed than Thibaud. Few violinists would even dare to try it this way. So it's a different orientation altogether. The standard of demonic, with respect, is the least applicable to Menuhin. To Menuhin, most Russian ways of playing simply lacked a whole dimension. Menuhun's Bruch is most wonderful too, in a way it is even more marvelous than his Mozart.

We have three concertos here and Menuhin was supported by different orchestras in each piece. In the first concerto, it was an orchestra from London, the second one from Paris and the third one from Germany. It's interesting to compare these orchestras from different part of Europe. Probably the standard in these countries are not much different now. The first one, the London Symphony was conducted by Sir Colin Davis, who was so young then and his gestures are enormous yet the collaboration was very good indeed. How come a clarinetist could make a good conductor? Amazaing. The second one was conducted by Menuhin himself and the third one by Fricsay. All of them are miles better than the conductor we see from Szeryng's 2003 DVD.

All were filmed in the 60's, all are in B/W. The photogragphy is, as usual of most BBC productions, very good. We can see exactly how he played almost throughout: his fingering, his vibrato, bowing everything. The sound is very good too. Those who are baffled by other DVDs which tell only his stories with little violin playing won't be disappointed this time. The running time is only 108 minutes though.

Russ Meyer's Mudhoney
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (06 January, 2003)
MPAA Rating:
Director: Russ Meyer
Average review score:

What an ending!
One of Russ Meyer's earlier works, "Mudhoney" is an uneven but ultimately satisfying greek tragedy disguised as hayseed soap opera. The direction is uneven, as is the tone, although the latter seems to be by design. You will be laughing one minute, then shuddering the next as over the top backwoods hijinx suddenly gives way to unexpected acts of humiliation and violence. Those who stick with it will be rewarded by an intense, dramatic ending that drips with irony. Not as cohesive or polished as "Lorna", but a worthy companion peice.

The picture quality of the DVD edition is very good (b/w, full screen). Also features animated menu and a few trailers for other RM films.

A sleazy, breezy Russ Meyer classic!
The second installment in Russ Meyer's series in Rural Dramas is one of his best: a well-shot, entertaining explitation piece which seems to get better with each viewing. An ex-prisoner find work (and sex) at a farm owned by Stewart Lancaster (who we all remember from FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL!) and his niece played by Antoinette Cristiani who is married to alchaholic sleazebag, Hal Hopper (LORNA). Even Russ Meyer himself has a very small part as someone in the crowd during Hal Hopper's execution at the end. Keep a lookout for this underated Russ Meyer flick because it's quite rare. Anyone reading this review from Australia can find this video at FASTER, PUSSYCAT! in NSW or at POLYESTER in VIC.

MASTERPIECE
Never before has a film been so alive,so emotional,so perfect. One of Meyer's best, filled with great acting, creative characters and personal style. To me,his film is Faulkner in the cinematic form.

Savage Beach
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (09 July, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Andy Sidaris
Average review score:

What you see is what you get!
Andy Sidaris! Guns and explosions! Random nudity! All-synonymous. I purchased this movie because it is the prequel to "Return to Savage Beach" which was, in my opinion, the best T&A movie that I have EVER seen up to this date. And if you don't know what T&A stands for than you are unfamiliar with the genre, and I therefore do NOT recommend ANY Andy Sidaris films to you. "Savage Beach" pales in comparisons when it comes to the babes in the movie. For bouncy silicone lovers, the sequel, Return to Savage Beach would definitely be a more satisfying choice. What you see on the cover is what you get with the original "Savage Beach." Two avergage looking blondes, scantily clad, packing serious heat. I give it 3 stars out of 5 because if you are even considering this film, than you're certainly not looking for much more than what you see on a cover. And in that case, this film does deliver, and even goes slightly beyond. It is cheesy (as expected) but comical. There is even something that ALMOST mildly resembles a plot, which was a surprising bonus to this film. "Savage Beach" is good for a B-rate, C-cup, Sidaris flick. But it does lack the much better looking, super double D-cup (and beyond), silicone laced, higer polished models featured in its sequel.

"Savage Beach" is Savage Fun!
Nobody will ever accuse writer/director/producer Andy Sidaris of delving into the the realm of film noir. Sidaris's films are all lighthearted romps by beautiful people through sunlit locations and improbable circumstances involving bullets, bombs and babes. Andy Sidaris is the Spielberg of T&A, and his movies are just good, plain fun.

In "Savage Beach," secret agents Donna Hamilton (Playmate Dona Spier) and Taryn Kendall (Playmate Hope Marie Carlton) reprise their roles from "Hard Ticket to Hawaii." This time, the two sexy superspies are stranded on an uncharted Pacific Island, which, a la "Gilligan's Island" is suddenly overrun by brawny, testosterone-choked males who are searching for some treasure left there by the Japanese during World War II. When not changing out of their wet things, or skinny dipping in the gentle surf, Donna and Taryn are locked in a life-or-death struggle to survive ninety-odd minutes of light bondage, ogling, and baldfaced sexual innuendo, punctuated by random gunfire and explosions. Taryn's incendiary crossbow is a nice tip of the hat to James Bond. "Q" never had it so good as Hope Marie makes it.

Although his scriptwriting leaves something to be desired (like a real plot), Sidaris's production values are excellent even when his actors and actresses don't and can't. Hope Marie and Dona really try to remember their lines. They are so likeable and so incredibly attractive, and so obviously having fun in this goofy picture that anyone who is in a serious state of mind is advised to take his raincloud elsewhere.

This newly-released Special Edition DVD includes trailers from other Sidaris films, an introduction by Andy and Penthouse Pet Julie Strain, and a segment of the "Andy Sidaris Film School," in which Andy dissects the technical aspects of moviemaking using his own films as material. Anyone who is interested in filmmmaking should watch this segment as it is informative and intelligent, and clearly shows that despite the "B" genre of Andy's films, he is both thoughtful and professional.

It's fun. Pure fun. Enjoy!

War of the Monsters - Gamera vs. Barugon
Released in DVD by Gotham Distribution (24 June, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Kojiro Hongo
Average review score:

Superb showa Gamera film, subpar DVD
War of the Monsters, aka Gamera vs. Barugon, is one of the showa (60s - 80s) Gamera series' highlights. The film is perhaps the most serious entry in the series and is the first color Gamera film.

However, the DVD from alpha video isn't quite up to task of showing this classic kaiju film in all of its brilliance. The worst problem on the disc is the print of the film. The film is in color, but you might not know that unless you knew it was beforehand. The colors are so faded on the film, it could be thought that it was filmed in black and white. Yet, this film can not be found on region 1 DVD anywhere else, and for 7 bucks, I highly recommend you pick it up, despite its faults.

Awesome movie
Gamera escapes from the rocket that was supposed to take him to Mars. Barugon and Gamera both look tight. No child cheering Gamera on through the whole movie. Gamera's scariest look of the Showa series. A great film for all ages. 10 stars out of 5

Fun, fun,fun!
What a fun goofy movie!
This should be required viewing for everyone that loves stuffy movies... it should cure them!
Arre!
