Keith Richards and the X-Pensive Winos: Live at the Hollywood Paladium

Keef Rocks!
I would have given it 5 stars, but the video quality is not the greatest.

Great sound! Great songs. Well worth the money!!

Highlight for me: Too Rude.

Enjoy!

A Precious Stone: Keith Live
When Keith released his first solo album, Talk is Cheap (1988), critics said that it was the best Rolling Stones record in 17 years. It was considered the best record since Exile on Main Street.
This was probably an exaggeration since both Some Girls (1978) and Tatto You (1981) were extraordinary records. But Talk is Cheap was an important album. It was the first solo album by Keith Richards.
After Keith released Talk is Cheap, he went on tour with his new band, The X-Pensive Winos--Waddy Watchel, Sarah Dash, Steve Jordan, and Ivan Neville.
The tour was very successful. It won an award for the best tour in small theaters. And it won the attention of many bootleggers. Keith decided to produce a live record just to stop the circulation of bootlegs. That's why the Live at the Palladium was made.
The concert was indeed a very good one. Keith does some of his best singing ever - I mean it !- and the band is very energetic. Keith's song set is made up mostly by the songs from his solo album- You shouldn't take it so hard, How I wish, Make no mistake, and so on.
There are also an soulful rendition of Time is on my side (sang by Sarah Dash), Too Rude (that Keith recorded the previous year with the Stones for the album Dirty Work), Happy (a vintage Keith from Exile on Main Street) and Connections.
It's really a nice concert and it's really nice to watch.

Open, drink from the bottle, then pass it around
What a timely performance to release on DVD. What with the Stones currently on tour and making themselves relevant yet again, this DVD becomes a touch stone for fans and students of rock'n roll everywhere. It might be easy to forget that the Stones chartered the original pirate ship that is modern Rock n' Roll. All the original attitude, bluster, sound and fury has not been diminished after all the years. On those occasions when the Stones choose to set sail, reviews often dwell on the tarnished treasures they bring to the stage. Gold is gold, you don't need to polish it to establish it's value. It just is. The Stones are the gold standard for modern Rock n' Roll. For that matter, they are also the gold standard for modern Rock n' Roll performance. Stadium, hall or club, the Rolling Stones bring more precious treasure to share than any other band. Their catalogue of songs is vast and impressive . Whatever album or show you identify as the pinnacle of their essence, each is a voyage unlike any other. The sum of the parts, produce a whole that is still the best in all of Rock n' Roll.

Obviously, Keith Richards is a large part of the whole that is the Rolling Stones. Some say he is the Rolling Stones. This DVD proves just how unique and gifted a performer/writer Keith is. Without the Stones show and Mick beside him, Keith just tears into HIS music and almost makes you forget he is a part of the Rolling Stones. Each song stands on it's own. Sure, the Stone's riffs are there but they're Keith's riffs. The Chuck Berry chords, the R & B melodies, the reggae groove, the soulful horn of Bobby Keys, all this adds up. You watch this DVD and cannot help but feel moved by Keith's love of the the music. It shows in his performance. He's not self-conscious or stage struck. He's carried off by the music and so are we.

The highlight for me is HIS version of "Time Is On My Side". With Sarah Dash on lead vocals, you completely forget the Stones version of this song. It reveals the deep soulful base that is at the heart of this song.

Every song is a torrid work-out rhythmically. The band is just superb. They leave lots of space for Keith to play those timely open chords he owns a patent on. Then there is his lead/rhythm solos that are just masterful, subtle moments that punctuate the melody/groove. He finds just the right balance between power and passion when stretching out. It might seem a stretch, but Keith's only rival in this respect is Willie Nelson. Their personality infuses every aspect of the song , every note they play.

The one interesting thing about this DVD is the lack of a true blues number. It seems to suggest that Jagger might be the blues conscience of the Stones. Not to suggest that Keith is uncomfortable in this genre, it is just interesting to consider the absence of a blues number in this performance. This in no way diminishes the set. This DVD is a must. Rolling Stones fans will be astonished at how "happy" Keith is. He holds the stage, he leads the band, he is in full sail.

The one last detail to mention is the sound. I believe the transfer of the video footage is appropriately grainy, but the sound is full on crisp. You hear this show and all the musicians clearly. PLAY LOUD.

Poor Audio Quality/Great Videos
AUDIO QUALITY
I had waited a long time for the video to the song, "Where Would You Be" to come out on DVD. I was naturally excited to find this DVD for $4.99 at Target. I came home and played the video of Martina performing 'Where Would You Be' live at the CMT (Country Music Television) awards show. Upon my first time of watching and listening to the video, I was really disappointed of the audio quality. At the beginning of the 'Where Would You Be' video an announcer-at the CMT awards show-says, "Ladies and Gentlemen, nominated for three CMT flameworthy awards tonight ... Martina McBride." The announcers voice was loud and clear, and once Martina started singing the volume dropped dramatically-it was like going from a normal speaking voice to a whisper. I even watched the equalizer on my sound system and only once or twice during the duration of the song, did Martina's voice reach the output as the announcer did. This is really sad especially considering that there are very high notes in the song!

The poor audio quality can be simply stated by saying that this DVD is not recorded in a Dolby Digital format like her 'Greatest Hits' DVD is. I even went back and forth playing the 'Independence Day' video from both the Greatest Hits DVD and this DVD to make sure. There is a huge sound difference between the two!

With that said, I don't think most people will catch the lack of digital sound quality. Instead they will compensate by turning up the volume a lot more than usual. As usual Martina's passionate voice, great songs, and charisma will make up for the fallacies of various video producers/managers that STILL haven't managed to put out a DVD that delivers 100%.

GREAT VIDEOS:
Here is a short summary for those that are new to Martina McBride...
1) THIS ONES FOR THE GIRLS ----- This song is a musical slumber party for the girls from '1 to 99' years old. It celebrates the joy of being a girl, and tells girls everywhere "You are beautiful the way you are".
2) CONCRETE ANGEL---- This is a sad, song, that reminds me of John Michael Montgomery's song, "The Little Girl". Both songs deal with young children that are physically abused. Sadly, in this video, the child dies from the abuse. And in the end, the friend she made prior to her death was actually an angel that takes her to heaven... where she is finally loved. It's a tear jerker! [A plug at the end of the video reads: "If you need help or suspect abuse call the National Child Abuse Hotline 1-800-4-A-CHILD. www.childhelpusa.org."]

3) WHERE WOULD YOU BE --- This song is by far one of the most compelling country music songs about a relationship on the rocks. The lyrics are written from the heart, and Martina delivers the power and emotion in this song. As stated earlier, this video is of her live performance at the CMT awards show, and not an actual 'video' per se.

4) BLESSED --- If you love life, love your children, are more happy that you have a happy family rather than a Mercedes Benz then this is the song for you. It is about appreciating the simple things in life that cost nothing.

5) WHEN GOD FEARING WOMEN GET THE BLUES --- This is probably one of my least favorite videos. It is on her greatest hits DVD as well.

6) INDEPENDENCE DAY --- There was a lot of controversy about this song when it was released. The low down: a battered wife finally decides to end her abuse by setting fire to their home-presumably with the abuser still in it. Hence, the reference to 'Independence Day' refers to the freedom the abuse she put up with, which, coincidentally also happens on the 4th of July.

All in all the DVD, is still worth the five dollars. However, if you don't have Martina's Greatest Hits DVD, and are willing to pay a little more for it, I would strongly suggest getting that DVD instead.

God bless Martina
I am especially excited about this new DVD of Martina McBride's because it includes the video for "Concrete Angel," a superb song that was not included in the "Greatest Hits" DVD. It was this song that made me a fan, and I am looking forward to hearing more of Martina's stuff. She has a beautiful voice and a lot of class; she is not afraid to sing about things like faith, hope, and prayer, and she will go far with that.

This DVD is available at a great price and for a singer with this much talent, it is well worth every penny. This is well worth buying for "Concrete Angel" alone; a heartbreaking song with a message that speaks volumes, this is a showcase of Martina McBride's great talent and courage.

Worth your money and time.
Well, for starters I should say that I have not always been a Martina McBride fan, but in about the last six months I have been catching up with her stuff. I was most excited to learn that she had a new CD (Martina) coming out and more so that a DVD with many of her music videos. This is that, and it is great if you are a Martina McBride fan. It mostly focuses on her new songs from her "Greatest Hits" CD, but also includes one from her new CD, This one's for the Girls, and an old one, Independence Day. I loved them all, and the price is right.

Marvin Gaye - Live in Montreux 1980
Released in DVD by Red Distribution, In (20 May, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Marvin Gaye
Marvin Gaye might not have been the obvious invitee to the 1980 Jazz Festival in Montreux, but this DVD of his appearance there is as good a document as any currently available of the soul sage at the height of his talents. Gaye is joined on stage by a full band replete with backup singers and horn section, all resplendent in their late-'70s fashion statements. While the continual onslaught of overhead lighting is reminiscent of a concert in a high school gym, Gaye isn't letting anything get in his way as he lays down groove after groove of his most beloved material. He fights to keep "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" fresh even if it's his zillionth time plaintively administering that age-old news. The whole concert brims with an energy that only climbs higher in the finale as Gaye electrifies with "Mercy Mercy Me" and takes his sweet time with his classic "What's Going On," in which he even includes a soul-searching monologue that answers with some finality that nagging question: what's it all about? Live at Montreux is a must for fans and connoisseurs of soul alike. --Karl Wachter

The best MG live finally around
It's finally here! I saw that one a long time ago on the german/french television ARTE and was dying to see it released on a quality dvd.
If you're a big fan of MG and knows everything about him and his tourmented life -especially at this time- (if not, you have to read the book 'Divided soul' by David ritz) you will certainly enjoy this concert. Top band, top notch picture quality and sound (it's 1980 guys !), this is the best MG live video around.
Make sure you check the amazing version of Inner City blues with MG sitting at the fender for a soulful solo while the incredible background singers are grooving like craaazay! Also for Claude Nobs presenting a ... award (not even framed for god sakes LOL) to MG at the end...
Thanks Eagle Rock, you've just made my day!!!
I must tell you something though : NO BONUS ? NO FIFTH STAR !!!

A Must For All Marvin Gaye Fans!!
Loved it!! This performance displays a more candid and personal side of Marvin. He spends some time at the piano, behind the drums, and even invites a couple of women onstage for a dance. There's also a stage blooper that was kind of funny! I won't give too much away, but this video is a must for all Marvin Gaye fans!!

Marvin Gaye Live in Montreux
This is the video all Marvin fans have been waiting for,An absolute must have.I don't know why these things take so long to be released so long after his death. This video oozes quality and delivers the songs we all want to hear Marvin sing. The sound and picture quality is excellent and is much better than the other live concert available on dvd.I think the sound must have been enhanced. Containing all the classic songs and giving great value for money,Marvin puts on a really funky show giving it all his effort,A true showman. The backing band and backing singers are also fantastic. There must be more classic Marvin Footage available and I hope it gets a release soon!

Funniest B-Movie I've Seen In Years!
I rented this flick on a friend's reccommendation, not expecting much. Boy was I surprised! I laughed my... off and then went out and added it to my collection. You know the story already, about the creation of a rock star from dead musicians parts, from the synopsis. This movie holds nothing scared and you absolutely MUST get the unrated version. The R version is total... and I accidentally ordered it from here. (Can't send it back now.) Make sure you get the UNRATED version.

Get the unrated R&R F
Simple as that - get the unrated R&R Frankenstein DVD and stay away from the butchered MPAA sanctioned R rated cut.

Unnatural Urges
This is the most hilarious movie I have seen in years.A record producer tries to build the perfect rock star by assembling the body parts of Elvis Presley,Buddy Holly,Jimi Hendrix and others. The plan goes awry when the pothead graverobbing roadies steal the wrong penis and the monster is equipped with Liberaces member instead of Jim Morrisons. The rock and roll Frankenstein tries to fight his homosexual urges which eventually lead to murder. This movie is full of extremely crude jokes and I would not recommend it to anyone who doesnt have a warped sense of humor. An instant classic.

Russ Meyer's Mondo Topless

MPAA Rating: X (Mature Audiences Only)
Director: Russ Meyer

shagadelica
A lively, bouncy, kaleidoscopic view on the topless dance girls of the late 60's.

The most memorable short scene, is that of a ridiculously proportioned girl, Darlene Grey, doing a topless boogie in the desert. Otherwise petite, she almost falls over on several occasions, because of the weight of her swinging breasts!
Unlikely to be forgotten in a hurry.

Never before has such carnal desire been evoked!
All hail the hedonistic dance of the leather belt.

Whole lotta shakin' goin' on!
Topless go-go girls abound in this wonderfully skewed, ultra-hip documentary from the one-and-only Russ Meyer. Great girls and great music.

Nazareth: Razamanaz
Released in DVD by Bmg Distribution (VI (22 October, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)

Good Small Venue Show
I will be a Naz fan no matter what, but I was a bit surprised how small the venue is where this show was taped. I was also surprised by how small and unenthusiastic the crowd appears to be. Perhaps that's why there aren't many (or any) crowd response shots. This is obviously a show that took place after their heyday. There's no crowd energy for the band to feed into. Oh well, it's still a great show and one of very few chances to see the original Nazareth on DVD. However, I would love to see a real insane rockin' show with a packed stadium and some band interview footage. This is by no means that kind of show, but it is still worth having. I think there is better concert footage of Nazareth available, maybe someday it will get released. I do remember borrowing a video of a much better Nazareth concert from the library years ago. I wish I could find that one. In the meantime, this DVD is better than nothing.

Anthony's Nazareth Review
The only reason I gave this dvd 4 stars is because it is too short! Otherwise a very good show! Nazareth is a very good band if you have never seen them live this is your chance to see all the original members put on a good show.

NAZARETH ROCKS!!!
THIS GIVES FANS OF THE BAND A CHANCE TO SEE NAZARETH PERFORM LIVE IN CONCERT A FEW YEARS AGO.
THIS CONCERT IS FROM THE EARLY 1980'S, HOWEVER THE SOUND QUALITY OF THIS DVD IN 5.1 SURROUND IS QUITE GOOD!!
IF YOU'RE A FAN AND CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON A COPY OF THIS DVD, I'M PRETTY SURE THAT YOU'LL ENJOY IT.
THE HOMECOMING DVD IS GREAT AS WELL, HOWEVER THAT IS A CONCERT FROM A MORE RECENT TIME!!
ALL I CAN SAY IS THIS: IF HARD ROCK IS YOU'RE THING, THEN NAZARETH SHOULD BE AT THE TOP OF YOUR BUY LIST!!!

Radar Men From the Moon Volume 1
Released in DVD by Gotham Distribution (24 September, 2002)

Finally serials are coming on DVD
While this is a good serial overall, beware that this DVD is only chapters 1-6 and you will have to buy another DVD with chapters 7-12. For some reason, Amazon indicates this for most of the other serials but neglects to mention it for Radar Men from the Moon. My problem is once I realized I had to buy the another DVD, the DVD was out of stock at Amazon and I had to wait a while for it to come in.

Jackpot!
It is somewhat a gamble when one buys the economical DVDs of Alpha. Some are good and some are bad. But this "Radar Men" from Alpha is simply astonsihing. Alpha seems to have obtained a well-preserved, almost mint copy of the serials. Though, some cleaning up was done, for example, the string pulling the flying dummy so obvious in the film version is not much in evidence here. This serial is one of the last GREAT hurrahs of the genre in the late 40's and early 50's. It was also interesting to see Clayton Moore as a villain, quite handsome really and very much unlike a serial baddie. But that Lone Ranger voice coming from an unmasked man really throws off a dyed in the blue LR fan to the point of being "uncomfortable". This is one Alpha product that is top notch. It is all regions too so all can enjoy!

amazing quality; why pay more
I was a little wary of buying this serial because several years back I had purchased a Will Rogers feature on VHS from Alpha and the quality stunk. However, the quality of the transfer on this two dvd set is simply stunning. The film is very clean with few if any dirt, lines or splices. Good rich contrast and a nice sharp image. Colorful box design, too. Good job, Alpha!

Roxanna
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (28 May, 2002)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Directors: Nick Phillips (IV) and Steve Millard
Average review score:

Fast forward review
OK, we got 3 stars here, one for the star, a pretty young girl with ace quality puffies, one for Uschi, who rolls around with the puffy girl just about as you'd like, a half star for another puffy girl later on (half star demotion for weird eye makeup), and another half star for all the playing around with the lead girl's puffies, which is precisely what you'd like to see.

Basically it's about the lead girl going crazy, presumably because of too much girl-girl sex, I don't know, I had the volume down. Anyway, every now and then it flashes to her doing weird things, once even drooling, but those parts are brief, especially on fast forward. There's some comedy in the form of portraying R rated girl sex in ways that don't really make anatomical sense, but mostly it's a soft core loop with really good girls and Uschi in one scene.

Let's see, there's also a 2002 version of the same loop, but don't bother, I'll save you the effort. And the bonus menu has a dumb thing called "Despair" that has maybe one sleaze scene that could be saved as a jpg.

Hottest soft core flick ever!
Uschi Digart is incredibly sexy in this film. I can't even describe the things she does to herself, does to others, and has done to herself. You have to watch it and you will agree that this is the sexiest 70's sexploitation film ever. The remake also on this DVD is awful, don't even waste your time. There is a 1/2 hour independent film on here that isn't half bad. I liked it better than the Roxanna remake.

A SEXY, BAD ACID TRIP
Bought an advance copy of this at a convention in Jersey, and got more than I bargained for! Roxanna, starring Misty Mundae, took every notion I had of a Seduction Cinema movie and threw it out of the window! A gritty drama about a gen-X type on an addiction fueled highway to hell! Misty gives her best performance to date, and Barbara Joyce sizzles as her sexy shrink! Haven't compared it to the original 1970 version (also on this disc) yet, but the remake itself was worth the cost! Director Ted Crestview brought a lot of vision to this one. Check it out!
