Inu-Yasha - Origin of the Sacred Jewel
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (26 August, 2003)
MPAA Rating:
Directors: Masashi Ikeda, Yasunao Aoki, and Naoya Aoki
The demon-slayers' village turns out to be the source of the Sacred Jewel, the key to this adventure series. With some help from Sango, Inu-Yasha, Kagome, and their friends are able to enter a vast cavern and learn how the Jewel was created long ago in a battle between hordes of monstrous demons and Midoriko, the greatest priestess of the age. The Shikon, or Jewel of the Four Souls, embodies the qualities of courage, friendship, wisdom, and love. When they function together, harmony and happiness are the result. But the Jewel is also a miniature battleground between good and evil: a metaphor for the world--and for Inu-Yasha's heart, as he vacillates between selfishness and kindness. To his credit, director Masashi Ikeda presents all this information without losing the tempo of the story's ongoing comedy and adventure. A great inuyasha DVD!!!!!
In this anime, After meeting the demon slayer called Sango, she tells the InuGumi,(Miroku,Kagome,Inuyasha,Shippo) the secret and past of the Sacred Shikon no Tama. In the three episodes, they fight a Fake Water God, whle Sango joins them on their quest of the Sacred jewel.

enter the demon exterminator....sango
In this Series, we meet one of the strongest exterminators around,Sango, her whole village destroyed by naraku, being tricked the whole time, and your only brother killed, who can bear that, but then later finds out that she was being tricked, and joins the team, along with her a cute cat demon, well looks can be decieving, when she goes into her true form, she turns in to a big cat, this series is a must have series.

I dare you to not hate Naraku after this one.
Sango joins the group in this volume, but not before evil-villain-who-must-die-horribly Naraku messess with her head and tries to make her attack Inu-Yasha. After realizing she's been duped, Sango helps the group learn the secret of the Shikon Jewel/Shikon no Tama, and the group then has their first battle with Sango on the team, as they take on a kid-eating water god, but the "god," is hiding something. A great volume, it is impossible to not feel sorry for poor Sango after Naraku kills everyone from her village. Naraku must die! Also, side note, Kelly Sheridan, who's Ukyo in the Ranma dub, Hitomi in the Escaflowne dub, and Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in X-men Evolution, does Sango's English voice. Her Japanese voice actress is Hoko Kuwashima , who's also the voice of Kasumi in the Dead or Alive games. Well, the group's finally assembled! Can't wait for volume 10!

I gave it 4 stars even though I love 40 water because of the reanacments which are terribly bootsee. Other than the reanacments Charlie Hustle is the SHH... and made me gain even more respect for E-40 Fonzarelli the T.K.A.(Tycoon Known As) Charlie Hustle. It tells the story of how E-40 started Sic-Wit-It Records out the trunk of his car and lets you know that Sic-Wit-It was the original Independet record label and E-40 is the ambassador of slang and the first to spit half the things all these other rappers run around saying acting like they the first. The movie also has tons of appearances from other artists and athletes like Terrell Davis, Gary Payton, J.R. Rider, 2Pac, Snoop, The Click and all of Cash Money just to name a few. Deffinitely worth the purchase so show 40 love and cop it.

Great CD, Wonderful DVD
What can i say Nancy and Ann unplugged. Video is fantastic and sound is good. This is a wonderful collection of Heart music done in an unplugged fashion with orchestra behind them. I highly recomend this DVD to any Heart fans for fresh new renditions of some fantastic songs presented up close and personal. I gave it 4 stars because I felt they could have done more with the 5.1 Dolby D track. Audio is still good but not in the same league with U2 live in Boston, Eagles, or Peter Gabriel.

Spectacular
I've had the cd of this concert for six or eight years, and I still get goosebumps when I listen to "All I Want To Do Is Make Love To You." I had no idea that the concert was available on DVD until I stumbled upon it at the local video shop. It is spectacular.

Wow, they've never sounded better!
This was recorded in 1995, at the Moore Theatre in Seattle. I'm giving this DVD 5 stars in spite of the fact that it freezes occassionally, sometimes distractingly so. However, take that with a grain of salt, since my player is a first generation player, and it may or may not be the player's fault. However, I have tons of other DVDs that do not freeze. I know there is always a brief pause in all dual-layer DVDs as the player switches from one layer to the next, but this thing froze briefly about 6 different times during playback. But please bear in mind, I think it highly likely my player may not be advanced enough to handle this for whatever reason.

Aside from that though, I can find absolutely no fault with the concert, video quality, sound quality, or performance. I lost track of 'Heart' back when they switched into 'hit machine' mode in the '80s. This is my first exposure to them recently, aside from the usual radio stuff.

Most notable is the fact that Ann Wilson has apparently not been sitting idle all these years. Her voice remains absolutely astounding (I repeat ASTOUNDING!), which I know requires a lot of work to maintain. And hell, I had no idea sister Nancy could even sing, but oh yes, she can. Marvelous vocals, harmonies, and guitar playing from her. The orchestra sounds wonderful too, as do all supporting musicians.

It goes without saying that everyone who ever loved 'Heart' will greatly enjoy this. Heck, anyone who loves good music will love this.

The Howlin' Wolf Story - The Secret History of Rock & Roll
Released in DVD by Bmg Distribution (VI (04 November, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Chester Burnett
Average review score:

The Wolf Lives!
This is a concise, affectionate and well-researched documentary on one of the true giants of the blues. It includes contemporary interviews with Wolf's family and friends and bandmates (including the great Hubert Sumlin) and rare footage of Wolf in his element (including some great full color shots of south side Chicago night clubs, as well as the famous Shindig show, introduced by the Rolling Stones.) It's too bad Wolf didn't live long enough to reap the rewards his rival Muddy Waters did. Still this film goes a long ways to putting Wolf's career in perpective, i.e., among the greats.

Howl! Wolf Lives!
In a time when we are bombarded with rapid-fire cutting and frustratingly brief snippets of footage it is refreshing to see a documentary that allows us to spend some time with it's subject matter-- in this case Chester Burnett AKA Howlin'Wolf. I have never seen this much footage on this legendary performer in any one place. If you're a fan of Wolf or the blues, I cannot recommend this film more highly. This DVD is like a Howlin' Wolf performance- you get your money's worth!

The Awesome Howlin' Wolf..KING of THE BLUES comes ALIVE
I saw a festival screening of this AMAZING Blues documentary....why it wasn't included in the lame MARTIN SCORCESE'S
PRESENTS : THE BLUES series I do not know (perhaps cause most of the series WAS so lame!)....maybe because the filmmakers are REAL blues scholars and serious documentarians of American Music ..unlike the dilitants and celebrities who were choosen to directed most of the Scorcese films.(Clint Eastwoood, please, give me a break...not much relevance to blues in his flabby 90 minutes!)

HOWLIN WOLF is nodoubt one of the most awe-inspiring performers and he is shown in some really amazing and rare clips throughout his career...plus,( Where did director Don McGlynn and Producer Joe Lauro FIND this amazing footage??).. they some how are able to also expose the sensitive HUMAN side of this blues god!....a REAL indept look at one of the true all time legends of the Blues.

Cesaria Evora: Live in Paris

Cesaria Evora in Paris - Live!!
Great concert, wonderful star & support musicians. Beautifully recorded butÉ whereas the cover offertyys 5.1 surround sound as an option and subtitles in various languages, there is nowhere on the menu to navigate to an area which permits these changes, so the reult is a stereo outpuit of superb sound just made for 5.1 or DTS. Disappointing.

The queen of Cape Verdean pop, filmed live in France
Singer Cesaria Evora is the cultural ambassador and greatest star of her native country, Cape Verde, a former Portuguese colony off the Northwestern coast of Africa. She excels at the highly stylized and emotionally intense ballad style known as the "morna," a melodramatic, mournful romantic music that is much like the Portuguese fado, full of beautiful, melancholy guitars and impassioned lyrics of love lost and life both savored and endured. For those of us unlucky enough to be unable to attend any of her concerts, here is a splendid presentation of Cesaria and her band, recorded live at the Zenith Theatre in Spring of 2001. The music is all heavenly, a selection of favorites drawn from several albums, including sleek ballads such as "Sodade," "Miss Perfumado," and "Angola." Hovering behind Cesaria are images of Cape Verde's hills, beaches and towns, while onstage, some of the country's finest musicians strum out gorgeous melodies. The one trouble with this video is the editing: the French producers seem to favor montages, including crossfades and overlays of the rear-projected images and the musicians onstage. This technique quickly becomes intrusive and detracts from the beauty of the performance -- personally, I would have preferred a few more lingering close-ups of the singer and her guitarists as they sank into the melancholy depths of the music. But still, this is a lovely glimpse at one of world music's great modern divas. Fans will be overjoyed!

when evrything works
well....I'm a jazz fan and sometimes the nolstagic music and also some old Cuban or Tnagos...basicaly I'm a sucker for good music with good melody, and good orchestras..not much into vocals..till I heard and saw this lady...oh..my~~...from the first note when the band starts till then end of the show...I just sat there mesmorized..as to how beutiful this music is...what a romantic voice..what a band playing behind her....they are playing and she is singing as to they are at the port in their country at the sunset when the fishermen are returning from the sea...so relaxed...but so together..EVERYTHING WORKS...MY KIDS WHO LISTEN ENTIRELY TO DIFFERNET KIND OF MUSIC..EVERYTIME THEY HEAR OR SEE THIS dvd THEY STOP DOING WHATEVER THEIR DOING...

I have a friend that listens only to British rock..and Jimy Hendrix..since he saw this DVD..I have a hard time keeping this disc away from his house....

well...Duke Ellington once said ..."There are only two kinds of music..Good music and Bad music.." this is just not good music it's a supperb performance...even if you don't understand a word...get it...!!

Divorcing Jack
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (26 February, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: David Caffrey (II)
Starring: David Thewlis and Rachel Griffiths
Average review score:

Dark, but quite good!
This movie is an offbeat, dark comedy, which brings to light the corrupt political climate of Northern Ireland and the presence of the IRA.
David Thewlis plays his quirky character to the hilt and beatifully balances the seriousness of the IRA ex-con, Pat Keegan (Jason Isaacs).
I loved this movie, with all of it's wit and humor. See it, I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

Divorcing Jack - a new view to the North
"Divorcing Jack", based on a novel by Colin Bateman, has a number of interesting characters including a nurse who moonlights as a stripping nun and an Afro-American CIA agent named Charlie Parker It takes place in the early 90's when the Peace Process was staggering forward. Fortunately, Bateman wrote the screenplay and chopped out enough of the 'inside' political fol-de-rol for an 'outsider' to follow the story without too much confusion. It's billed as a 'Comedy-Thriller' and David Thewlis acts the part of besotted Protestant newspaper columnist Paul Starkey with enough world weariness to be believable. There are as many twists and turns as the road through the Glens of Antrim and the message, meant for those who are doomed to repeat history, comes through dynamically at the close.
There are a number of interesting writers and films from and about the North, not the least of which is "An Everlasting Piece" though that seems to have been torpedoed by Stephen Speilberg. There are still clunkers of the terrorist/ /torturer type, but hopefully they'll fade out in the future; if we have learned from the past.

Black comedy at its best
This is a comedy classic - filmed at a time when peace was just breaking out in Northern Ireland after nearly 30 years of pain, hurt and suffering. The Northern Irish have a good laugh at the stupity of the war and indeed themselves as only they can!

Director: Salvatore Stabile

Little Richard would agree...
This was a movie definitely worth it.However (here's where the Little Richard thing comes in) it's basically JUST A RIPOFF OF OMAR EPPS/TUPAC'S "JUICE",USING WHITE GUYS.

If you liked 'HATE', this film is definately for you...
Sometimes film don't fit any category, as we can see with 'HATE' and 'Tetsuo: Iron Man'. Although a bit harshly shot (not bad for only a $5,000 budget though!), it is cleverly executed, bringing a stark look to a group of kids who really weren't ready for this...

GRAVESEND IS WHAT IT IS. A CULT CLASSIC. EXCELLENT ACTORS!!!
IF YOU ASK ANYONE WHAT THEY THOUGHT OF GRAVESEND, YOU WILL GET 50% HATED IT 50% LOVED IT. AND YOU KNOW WHAT===IT HAS TO BE AN EXCELLENT MOVIE BECAUSE IT MAKES PEOPLE REACT IN WAYS THAT OTHER MOVIES DO NOT. PEOPLE GET HAPPY WHEN THEY TALK ABOUT IT AND GET MAD WHEN THEY TALK ABOUT IT. BOTTOM LINE--OLIVER STONE AND SPIELBERG LOVED IT AND IF ITS GOOD ENOUGH FOR THEM, IT SHOULD BE GOOD ENOUGH FOR EVERYONE ELSE. ANYONE WHO INSULTS THIS MOVIE IS JUST JEALOUS AND COULD NOT HAVE THE COURAGE TO WRITE DIRECT CAST AND PRODUCE A $5000.00 FEATURE. TOP THAT BIG MOUTHS. ALSO TOM BRANDISE (MIKEY) AND TONY TUCCI (ZANE) WERE INCREDIBLE. THE CHARACTER OF RAY WAS WEAK...

Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees (Large Format)
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (04 February, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: David Lickley
Did you know that chimpanzees and humans have 98 percent of their DNA in common? You will after watching this absorbing 75-minute (including extras) documentary, featuring and partially narrated by renowned researcher Jane Goodall, who's been on the chimps' case for more than four decades. We see these African apes on the ground and in trees, playing, grooming, teaching, even killing one another. The scenes of them "fishing" for termites and ants using a stick for a pole make for extraordinary viewing; indeed, the film's principal message is that they and we are very much alike. And while the small screen can't capture the full majesty of what began as an IMAX film, one can sense the almost palpable three-dimensionality of the original. The DVD is also loaded with bonus features, including a 15-minute behind-the-scenes look at the filmmaking process and more. This is great stuff. --Sam Graham
Average review score:

Too Preachy
Pretty good primate documentary. Cool parts include black and white footage of a young Jane Goodall interacting with the same chimps she visits now. [Weak] parts include the obligatory guilt-inducing checkbook-opening "don't let us go extinct" chapter at the end. Complete with Goodall lecturing a racially mixed class of schoolchildren about conservation. I'm not against racially mixed classes of schoolchildren, and I'm not against saving the apes, but I watch movies to escape rather than be reminded of reality.

There are lots and lots of cute chimps playing (with a really cool baboon/chimp playing together section), but not too much in the way of science. This may be what you want, of course.

Knowledge+Understanding=Caring
What a tribute to Dr. Jane's work and the "kindred souls" she is deparately seeking to save from extinction. This IMAX edition captures the "soul" of both Dr Jane and the wild chimpanzees and will surely capture the hearts of all viewers (of any age). Sound and picture are breathtaking and will bring Gombe into your den or living room. But there is something even more important....
Now do two things (1) get this DVD right away and share it with your family, friends, students etc. and then (2) contact the Jane Goodall Institute (Roots & Shoots for the little ones in your life) and help save this species "So Like Us" for our children and their children's children.

Fabulous Production, Important Subject!
A hundred years ago chimpanzies numbered between 1,000,000 and 2,000,000 in 25 African countries. Now "there are no more than 150,000 left," according to Dr. Jane Goodall.

This shocking fact underlies David Lickley's IMAX documentary about Jane Goodall and her groundbreaking research. Her remarkable 43-year career (and counting!) studying the wild chimps at Gombe National Park in Tanzania has led to several important discoveries, causing Science (capital S) to have to redefine what separates Mankind from the other animals. Goodall's own quiet tenacity has been tested as she must now spend most of her time advocating for the very survival of man's closest living relative.

The ultra-high-definition IMAX format provides a gorgeous transfer to DVD format, in both sound and image. Close-up images of the individuals at Gombe, as well as panoramic recordings of the sounds of the rainforest, make this a treat for the eyes and ears. Goodall herself does nearly all of the narration. South African musician Johnny Clegg provides several songs which integrate seamlessly into Amin Bhatia's orchestral score. Mini-featurettes on the DVD describe the difficulty of filming the notoriously-shy chimpanzies in remote Africa with the bulky IMAX cameras -- which can shoot for only 3-minutes at a time. Another featurette describes the recording of the music, including lots of rare shots of Clegg in the studio. Lickley's DVD commentary provides a ton of additional information missing from the original IMAX production.

All in all, this is a wonderful package in every regard.

Happy Tree Friends - Second Serving (Vol. 2)
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (14 October, 2003)
MPAA Rating:
Average review score:

This is disturbing stuff
I may be old fashioned, but then, I work with adolescents in a professional capacity. I found the images in this video to be disturbing not only because cute, cuddly little animals are mutilated in every episode, but mostly because the victims express PAIN as they are being decapitated, eviscerated having their eyes pulled out and having their cartoon blood spray across the screen. This is absolutely not for young children and I question the taste and the "sense of humor" of those who find this ugliness funny. This is yet another example of how we become innured to the pain of others. Yes, I know these "others" are cartoon characters. But the violent and vicious intent of this "entertainment" is chilling. It's no wonder we have snipers hiding in cars, picking off innocent bystanders for sport. It's FUNNY isn't it?

Happy tree friends rock!
The happy tree friends are so cool! Anyone who watches the simpsons will know itchy and scratchy. And if you like itchy and scratchy, you will LOVE Happy tree friends. Basically, you watch loads of cute little animals hack each other to pieces. Think Hello Kitty with a chainsaw. Happy tree friends are really funny, but it's seriously gross, so don't let little kids watch it1

demented cartoon violence
I agree with the other reviewer. The DVD consists of a lot of short cartoons in which most of the cartoon characters get blown up, sawed in two or eaten. There is a lot of cartoon blood and guts. My 13 yr old daughter wanted this, so all her friends gathered around to watch it. Most of them liked it, but a few didn't. Smaller children probably shouldn't watch it; in fact, there is a warning on the cover "Not recommended for small children or big babies". If you like cartoons with a twist similar to South Park (but without the language) then you'll probably like this. The theme song really got on my nerves because they play it at the beginning and end of every short episode, and there are about 15 of them on a DVD.
