Doors - Soundstage Performances

Great Live Performances.
Leave it to The Doors to release a new DVD with performances you can ALREADY get on the "Doors Collection" and "Live In Europe" DVDs but they make it tempting because there are a few "new" added songs and interviews with the band members and manager Danny Sugerman. This is still a pretty interesting document on how much of a great live band The Doors actually were. More influential than even the music is The Doors', and especially Jim Morrison's, stage presence. Morrison introduced theater into rock music, he brought the classic drama of the Greeks and writings of William Blake and Nietzsche to the rock stage. We need look no further than to their stunning performance of "The End" in this set to see that Morrison was the first rock performer to bring the elements of shamanistic ritual to the genre long before the likes of Godsmack's Sully Erna or Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder. Fans should especially get this new collection for "The End," it is a great, rare performance recorded for a television program before "Light My Fire" had even hit #1 and attained the band legendary status. Here we also find an example of how Morrison, clad in black leather, introduced darkness into the mainstream during the Summer Of Love (though the Velvet Underground is credited sometimes for bringing the darker corners of rock, it is The Doors who perfected it and made it influential and widespread). Here Morrison appears as the poet, he croons, screams and collapses. "When The Music's Over" is another moment of great effect, here the band comes alive with another of their long poetic invocations where Morrison chants "we want the world and we want it now." Ray Manzarek masterfully creates mood with his organ while Robby Krieger adds his guitar licks as energetic brushstrokes and drummer John Densmore accents it all with his expressionistic, highly influential work. Morrison again croons, invokes and chants like a shaman turned rock star come to liberate us from repetitive, popular music constraints. The most lacking segment is that of the PBS special the band did shortly after the infamous 1969 Miami concert where Morrison supposedly exposed himself. First, there is the bad video quality, it looks more blurry and shakey than in the original versions found in the "Doors Collection" DVD, where the images appeared crisp and clear. Second, well, let's be honest, "The Soft Parade" remains The Doors' weakest album and it shows here, if "The End" and "When The Music's Over" grab us, then "Tell All The People" and "Wishful, Sinful" play more like easy, digestable candy for the ears. The only noteworthy part is when the band breaks into their classic live medley of "Alabama Song" and "Backdoor Man" where they masterfully perform the selection from the classic German opera and a midnight blues crawler by Willie Dixon. "The Soundstage Performances" therefore is a nice addition to a Doors'fan collection, that is, the Doors fan who is willing to buy a new tape or DVD with performances he/she may already own for the sake of a few new additions such as the insightful interviews with the band members and manager found before the performances. Still, this is a good set that displays the live power of the greatest American rock band of all time.

Must get but could have been better
This DVD is worth getting for early 67 performance of The End in Toronto (even if the Oedipal section was not performed) and the complete Copenhagen TV broadcast. The PBS interview and performances are also complete - it is great to see and hear Tell All The People live along with Back Door Man (the rest of the PBS video renditions have appeared before). BUT what source material did they use to make the PBS segment of the DVD? The picture quality is really poor; there are drop-outs, white lines, and the color is washed out. This wouldn't be so frustrating but portions of the segment appear on the Doors Soft Parade laser disc and The Doors Collection DVD set in really fine quality without all the video noise. The recent interview segments with the surviving Doors (do they look OLD!) are interesting but the video is jumpy and the sound sometimes out-of-synch. Poor DVD rendering. In the end I still recommend it for anyone who has a passion for the Doors.

More! More!!
What there is of this is great--really fasinating--wish there was more footage of the European tour. The Denmark footage is spell-binding. These guys were good..really good. Its been said a million X's--million and one now--but the 60's were a magical time (musically speaking-can't say that for anything else going on at the time). If you like the Doors--get this!!

Eros Ramazzotti: Stilelibero
Released in DVD by Bmg Distribution (VI (05 February, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Eros Ramazzotti
Average review score:

Great concert, but only partly featured on this DVD
Unfortunately, this DVD features only a choice of songs from Eros' Milan concert during his Stilelibero Tour of 2001. However, the choice is good and besides tracks from Stilelibero, you can hear his greatest hits, such as Dove c'e musica, Cose della vita, etc.

As a non-Italian, I found subtitles to be the most interesting feature. It's possible to listen to a song with Italian subtitles (that's something like karaoke), but also in English, German or Spanish - the easiest way to translate Eros' songs in real time.

Eros has real tallent.
I started working on a doctorate in Rome a year ago. Prior to this I never listened to any "foreign" music other than from England for Pete's sake. Eros is excellent! His new "9" is solid. Even if you don't know the language, you'll like the songs. If you do know the language - Italian , he also sings in Spanish - you gotta get to know this guy. He's sold over 20 million C.D.'s in Europe! If that doesn't tell you something . . .

Simply the Best There Is
He makes a very good performance, in which the ladies go wild with excitement, the music flows well, and the overall ambience of the crowd revs you up for more! It makes you wish he would have more video releases for the US market. To those who don't know who he is, this is the video to watch to gain a preview of what he is all about.

Pat Metheny Group - Speaking of Now Live
Released in DVD by Red Distribution, In (18 November, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Pat Metheny
There's nary a flaw to be found in this lengthy (135 minutes) concert performance by guitarist Pat Metheny and his sextet, recorded in Tokyo in 2002. The musicianship is superb, the material (much of it drawn from the Metheny Group album of the same name) strong, the sound and visuals impeccable, the audience respectful... and therein lies the problem, such as it is. The whole effect is a bit sterile; there's little of the communication between listeners and players that can ignite jazz or rock shows in more intimate, less formal settings. Co-founders Metheny and keyboardist Lyle Mays, longtime bassist/co-producer Steve Rodby, and the three more recent members (multi-instrumentalists Richard Bona and Cuong Vu and drummer Antonio Sanchez) are all brilliant, versatile players. And it's nice to hear their interpretations of Jobim's "How Insensitive" and Metheny's lovely title tune from the film A Map of the World. But unless you get off on seeing a lot of close-ups of Metheny's facial contortions, listening to the PMG's recordings should suffice. --Sam Graham

SON DVD playlist inaccuracy?
Song #12 is identified on the box, liner notes, song index and actual screen intro as AYGWM?, but appears to be Into the Dream (from ID). Pat's playing his 42-string pikasso, aided only by a brief trumpet solo which fades the ending. TRULY disappointed in the error, as AYGWM is a concert staple and a wonderful tune live, at least as it was played on a majority of the tour.

Great DVD! &That IS "Are you going with me" - Are you deaf??
What a gift from Pat and the band - this is the best band in the world right now with the addition of Antonio Sanchez, and Metheny himself after a few challenges from the likes of Scofield and Frisell has left them in the dust with his new trio and this amazing version of the PMG. And Vu is destined to great things under the Metheny/Mays tutorship, just watch. I was glad to be spared Richard Bona's blatant (and not too good) Jaco Pastorius imatation, that was the only real blemish on the live show that I saw and I am glad that they left it off.

To the person who claims that track 12 is a listing mistake, I can only deduce that you are deaf and have never actually listened to the MELODY of Are You Going With Me. (It is like all the idiots that can't seem to hear the melody of Pat's brilliant new version of Last Train Home). People like that who not only can't hear but then get all indignant about it are the kind of people that appear to have no experience listening to jazz and are applying some other kind of background to Metheny's work - and certainly are unqualified to be commenting on it. It is sad and I hope Pat never gets discouraged by the fact that there are people listening to him who can't even identify the melody to his most famous tunes unless played in the exact arrangment that appears on the original. Cuong's phrasing and interpretation of the AYGWM melody could not be more clear - or beautiful; a highlight of this set. And there are at least two other video versions of the "straight" version of this elsewhere - so glad they included this one like this.

LIsten up, people!!!! This is the band of our time at their very best.

superb
i have seen the concert in june 2002 in stra near venice in italy. it was just superb. even if the lightsystem was blown off from the heat and the mosquitos where having their greatest time of the year, the music was just magic. the combination of the environment in the garden of the castello and this great music was just perfect. i for my self felt deeply moved to be privileged to see the worlds most genious and greatest musicians all together on the stage. i believe this dvd will be a great historical document for times to come

'70s Soul Jam, Vol. 1

SHOULD BE CALLED SEVENTIES SOUL RELIVED !!!!!!
THIS DVD INCLUDES AT THE BEGINNING ABOUT 5 HIT STYLISTS SONGS WHICH ALL SOUND PRETTY GOOD. I FOUND THE CHILITES HITS WERE WELL DONE, ESPECIALLY HAVE YOU SEEN HER. THE DELFONICS HIT LA,LA,LA MEANS I LOVE U WAS A LITTLE OFF, BUT THEY DID BETTER ONCE THEY WARMED UP DID A BETTTER VERSION OF DIDNT I BLOW YOUR MIND. THE FAKE HAROLD MELVIN CLOSES AT THE END WITH THEIR TWO HITS WITH HIS VERY POWERFUL VOICE. THEIR CLOTHES WERE RETRO SEVENTIES OUTFITS WHICH WAS PRETTY COOL. BUT I GOTTA SAY I VERY MUCH ENJOYED THIS DVD VOLUME #1. GLAD I GOT IT. BUT I DONT RECOMMEND VOLUMES 2 AND 3 WHICH WERE DISAPPOINTING TO SAY THE LEAST. VOLUME 1 IS EXCELLENT.THE DINOSAUR DANCE MOVES WERE HILARIOUS AND A COUPLE OF THESE GUYS LOOK LIKE THERE READY TO CHECK IN TO AN OLD FOLKS HOME

70s Soul Jam
I must admit at first I thought it was the original 70s footage and then on puchasing realised it was a relatively new concert.Great to see all these guys together and still sounding great. However camera angles and editing were not great and no extra footage or material on the dvd.We are told nothing of the history of the groups or even in some cases if we have any of the original members of the group.Other concerts of this type I have seen were more exciting than this with some facts and history being included in the show.Lets see more shows like this getting a release along with the original 70s footage.

where are the rest of them(philly groups)?
this is really magic.the stylistics, they stole the entire show.i have enjoyed the presence of harold melvin's bluenotes, the guys are amazing.i am just wondering where are the rest of the soul sounds including the o'jays, intruders, tavares, the pips and the detroit spinners just to mention a few.it will be really appreciated if you happen to release more and more kind of music like this ones on dvd.my personal advice is that inorder for one to enjoy this dvd,it's better if you purchase all the volumes(one to three)

Dungeons of Harrow

Starring: Russ Harvey
Average review score:

A TRIUMPH OF TRASH!
I have been obsessed with this movie since I was about seven years old. I saw it on the afternoon movie while visiting my Grandparents one summer in Clovis, NM. Since that day, the hideous vision of the leprous Countess DeSade lurking around in the dungeon has never left me.
I adore this movie in all its cheapness. I love watching it and I don't care what anyone says.
The scene where the Countess DeSade in her rotting dress and veil steps out from the dark corner and says, "I am the Countess!", will haunt me forever.
It is oddly one of the defining moments of my childhood, or at least something I remember better than almost anything else.
I am STUNNED that this has been given a DVD release, but I am completely overjoyed!!

TURKEY ON PARADE!
There is no secret about it, Dungeons of Harrow is an absolute double turkey if there ever was one. It's incredibly stupid, poorly filmed, badly constructed. The budget... it just wasn't there during the filming. The writer-director also duplicates as as the make-up artist. And then... there comes the film's main asset: it's actors! After being heavily sedated by the... what was the word... director..? in order to give the film a proper European "dreamlike" quality, the miserable bunch gives their best to film something that is supposed to be very much like Corman's House of Usher, released a few years earlier, but misses by a few lightyears. Nevertheless, this is a movie not to be missed: it's hilariously funny, regardless whether you are into this kind of stuff or not. The way the actors struggle through their highly literary dialogue ("This is a much too dark a secret to be revealed on as black a night as this") is absolutely engrossing. "The count" gives one of the most ridiculous performances of the sixties, plus there is the quite inexplicable, soft middle aged "devil" or something who only appears in the beginning of the film, wallows in narcissistic drama for a minute or so, and then leaves, giving the Count ample reason to question his sanity ("Yes, it must have been the wine, yes, yes!" being his conclusion). The way the Count makes his big entrance in a Superman fashion, ponting and shouting "So!!!" - not once, but twice! - left me in deepest awe. I wish the copy could have been a little better - this kind of trash looks nice when it's a bit worn out, but this looks almost too bad. Nevertheless, a wonderful experience to be enjoyed in a good sophisticated company of depraved individuals.

TEXAS MADE TERROR TREAT!!
Pat Boyette, former comicbook artist for Charlton comics made this wonderful piece of cimematic horror. A man and his ship's captain find themselves stranded on an island inhabited by Count DeSade, an insane man if there ever was one. He spends most of the movie torturing the ships captain and making everyone else's life miserable as well.
It's hard to believe it, but this film is about as creepy as they come. I first saw it in the early 80's and I am very glad it has been brought to DVD by Alpha. Check it out!!!

Good Stuff
Guess I'm loyal to CKYK but this was pretty cool. I especially liked the "making of..." section where you see the difficulty of the moves and the number of bails and falls before they nail the trick. The van running stuff over was funny as s&%t (EXCEPT FOR RUNNING OVER TREES- EARTH TO DUMB GUY: TREES AND PLANTS CONVERT SUNLIGHT AND WATER TO OXYGEN- YOU NEED OXYGEN TO BREATHE). TH is unreal. Good soundtrack. Was hoping to see more of Bucky.

Great reminder of the excellence of birdhouse
As a skate video alone, I would most likely give the end 5 stars, but the dvd clearly takes it to that great level. The video itself interweaves individual skaters' footage with more humorous introductions (some very short, some just as long as the footage itself). When you talk with your friends about the video, you'll probably mention Andrew Reynolds' beer-drinking monkey or Heath and Jeremy's disastrous van ride, but I think what makes it great (and what should make it great) is the skating itself. The skits can get old over time and will lose their novelty but the skating is ground-breaking enough to stay with you. In addition, the dvd really includes a ton of extra material (I especially enjoyed the extra footage with each skater's bio and had a laugh at the chaotic team commentary) that clearly makes this an excellent purchase.

the best skting movie, of ALL time.........
this is easily the best skating movie of all time(excluding "thrill of it all, Modus ',atc) with all the wicked skaters, a million dollar budget and everything i think it is bound to be great, because at the time of this birdhouse had the best ever team easily, apart from old plan b, which means this for sure is a garantee to sucess.....

Never seen it
I like both of the videos, but if someone has the dvd, is there more on the dvd than the videos? just wondering

Very good quality videos
The quality of these videos are outstanding! But, that's all there is besides a photo shoot, a couple of websites and credits. The other dvd has much more extras then this does, but this dvd is also cheeper, if you buy it anywhere but here! So, recommended, but the other ones better!

Wow!
These videos are totally awesome. Complicated is a better video than Losing Grip, but Losing Grip is still pretty awesome! The photo gallery is awesome and really fun. This is highly recommended if you like Avril a lot. Or buy this if you loved the Complicated video! ENJOY!

Banned From Television Uncensored!
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (18 February, 2002)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Average review score:

It's Real and it ain't Funny
I am always the person who, when watching real life footage of intense situations, always wonders how the whole thing ultimately played out. The syndicated shows or news programs usually censor out the last moments of a situation, and for good reasons. If the footage is too graphic or disturbing, it is probably a good thing we don't see it on a program watched by children. That is where "Banned From Television Uncensored" comes in. This is like every police reality program aired on television except that here you see what happens after that guy pulls a gun on the police, or after an animal goes on a rampage. This DVD is not for the weak of heart, although there are several scenes that aren't extreme due to the circumstances or the limitations of the person filming them (the aftermath of a car crash is not shown up close, a shark attack merely shows some blood in the water, concert footage deals more with lewd behavior than anything else).

This fifty-four minute DVD contains twenty-five chapters with situations ranging from an undercover police video at a strip club to a shark attack on a student, from a collapsing tower at a Deep Purple concert in Chile to several scenes of police brutality in South America. The most gruesome scene involves a woman who, in a hurry to get wherever she needed to go, accidentally jogs into a speeding train. You can see from the video clip of the accident why she failed to stop in time, but it is still brutal to watch and highlights the reason your parents always told you to look both ways before crossing the street. When I read about this scene before purchasing the DVD, I knew exactly the footage I would see because one of those cable channels that always show various documentaries covered this train accident in a program some time ago. Of course, on cable the scene cut away right before impact. Here you see it from start to finish, and it is a powerful statement on how carelessness has the potential for tragic consequences.

Releasing footage like this for general consumption raises several ethical questions that have no easy answers. Should we watch real life violence that causes suffering and death to real people? Is it really any of our business to watch the last few seconds of an individual's life captured on film? Perhaps seeing the full consequences of a police standoff or the results from a car crash that should never have happened might teach a few lessons to some of the thicker headed souls among us. This is one of the weak arguments touted by the media because they need to justify their intrusive investigations into other people's misery. Even if showing a public execution (and there are three of them on this DVD) or a car crash due to reckless behavior does deter some people from harming others, there is absolutely no way to quantify how many people changed their behavior because of something they watched on television.

Another argument concerning DVD's like this hinge on whether this type of footage should serve as entertainment. I have watched several of the "Faces of Death" documentaries and now there is something called "Traces of Death" that is supposedly even more extreme. The presentation of those tapes falls under entertainment, as disgusting as that is. I'm unsure if the same can be said for "Banned From Television Uncensored." The narration for each scene is sedate and serious, but the marketing on the package does indicate this DVD is somehow cool because hey, it's entertaining to watch real people suffer! Well, I found nothing slightly amusing about anything on this DVD. Some people will watch this for entertainment, while others will watch out of curiosity. There are not any easy answers to justify watching this DVD, but if you're hooting and hollering over this footage you have a real problem.

If anything, the best purpose for the existence of this DVD is to show how thin the veneer of civilization really is, how close all of us are to living in a world of complete and utter anarchy. We like to think we're civilized people, but this disc clearly shows we have a long way to go. I do think America haters should watch the footage about police forces in Central and South America. Those that complain about police brutality in this nation really have little conception of how brutal and corrupt security services are in Brazil, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Mexico. Just watch the police footage on the DVD and compare the actions of American police with those in other countries. You'll thank your lucky stars you live in a country with constitutional limitations on police powers that are actually respected by a vast majority of police officers.

Desensitize Yourself
Banned From Television Uncensored! is for anyone who, like me, has no respect for human life. Like my title says, desensitize yourself; there is no reason to hold yourself back from the truth. You're being screwed over everyday of your life, you don't owe respect to anyone or anything, so endulge and enjoy!

Oops
I accidentally reviewed this already, but it was on the "Best of Banned from Television". The DVD cover was the same as mine so I thought it was that one. Mine just doesn't say "best of".

But you've read the reviews here, this is real. This is heavy duty stuff. Faces of Death are all fake, they say so on the first DVD's interview feature thing. Not this though. Not a single thing here is staged, acted out, anything like that. Guys blowing off their faces while police just sit back and allow him to (they watch him load the gun from the trunk of his car), a bull who almost kills a woman (I feel bad for that bull, it suffered too much), cars blowing up in suicide attempts, cars hitting people, a train hitting a woman, public executions. That's what you'll see on this.

I actually think a lot of the stuff here is funny. When I watched it with my friends, I was laughing while they were in shock/awe over most of the things here.

But read my review on the "best of" version since that gives you more insight. If you can stomach it, get this. You'll have a hay day.

Mulva:Zombie Ass Kicker/Filthy Mcnast
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (26 August, 2003)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Chris Seaver
Average review score:

A cross between AIRPLANE! and Troma films!
Combines all of the elements that made AIRPLANE! and many of Troma's films work. Silly sight gags, ridiculous characters and on-the-fly gore...far more entertaining than any of the gross-out comedies that Hollywood's been vomiting out lately!

LBP & Debbie Rochon ~ What more could you want
Filthy McNasty alone is worth twice the price, but you prob already have that as a bonus on the Dead & Rotting special edition if you are a Debbie Rochon fan **drool**.
Mulva is annoying at times, especially in the beginning, but is just as twisted as you would expect from Seaver & LBP. Filthy McNasty is one of (if not THE) best independent films I've seen. Pure sickness at it's sickest :). Both films are loaded with 80's pop culture references, love the John Stamos bashing.
If none of this has made you buy, let me add: eye socket sex, auto-erotic coprophilia, cranial phallus impalement, and that's just in Filthy.

schuper schweet!
This movie was hilarious.
Very talented star actress, Missy Donatuti.
Great production.

I was amazed and wowed.

Disappointing sound quality
I was excited to see Nazereth come out with a DVD concert disc with DTS. I grew up in the 70's and even seen Nazereth in concert in their heyday. However once I played the disc, my excitement turned to disappointment. The video quality is fairly good, but the DTS recording is real poor. I guess I am just spoiled by quality DTS recordings like Santana "Supernatural" and Eagles "Hell Freezes Over".

Consult
I live in Lima -Peru and i see that the code of your DVD's is 1 and here in Peru is 4 . ¿Do you have DVD's for sale with that code?

Satisfied 100%
I disagree with the dude who didn't like the sound. Dan's microphone was a bit quiet, but everything else is a top notch. I saw then in 2000 and 2001 in US tours and teh DVD was as good as seeing them live. I was satisfied 100% with this product.
