Gamera vs. Guiron
Released in DVD by Gotham Distribution (18 November, 2003)
Starring: Nobuhiro Kashima
Average review score:

Attack of the MonstersThis is the one where Gamera fights a monster with a knife for a head and throwing stars shooting from its temple. I hope this version shows the Gamera gymnastic scene. This one, Gamera Vs Gaos and Gamera Vs Jaiger are my favorites because they threw out believe-ability out the door and concentrated on childish monster fighting.

The Ghost
Released in DVD by Gotham Distribution (07 October, 2003)
Starring: Barbara Steele
Average review score:

FOR STEELE FANS.....Riccardo Freda followed up his 1962 classic "Terror of Dr.Hitchcock" with 1963's "The Ghost"...again with Barbara Steele. This time, Hitchcock is a frail ailing man in a wheelchair relying on seances and drugs. His beautiful and glamorous wife Margaret (Steele) is tired of looking after him and wants to be with her lover, family friend Dr.Livingstone. She also wants his wealth and the jewels he keeps locked in a safe. So she persuades Livingstone to kill him. But as soon as he's entombed, Dr.Hitchcock's ghost seeemingly returns to haunt them. Margaret is especially targeted and driven to frenzy. In a well done scene, she believes Livingstone has tricked her out of the jewels and slashes him to death with a straight razor---the blood splattering and running down the screen. "The Ghost" is an exquisitely mounted Gothic horror film with beautiful sets and dripping with morbid atmosphere. Steele looks fantastic. She is well photographed to show off her lustrous dark hair and dark exotic eyes. She is especially fetching in period costumes...particularly a black sequined lace gown. Her performance as vixen/victim is very good. The pace of the film is very leisurely allowing the terror to mount bit by bit until full throttle horror sets in. Unfortunately, it's released by the cheapo Alpha Video people so the transfer is lousy. Diehards (such as myself) will find it watchable though. Until someone rescues it and gives it the treatment it so richly deserves, this is the best we can get. So for the fans, it's a find. Enjoy.

Grip, Vol. 2
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (19 August, 2003)
Average review score:

Even better than the V1When V1 came out I was impressed with it....V2 is even better. If you enjoy watching high quality, well edited, informative import car, check this video. Each segment provided enough info to make it interesting, not boring at all. Different subject matter made the video move along pretty fast, before you know it the 1-hour plus video went by. Great mix of techno car stuff and girls. The drifting segment was pretty hard core, made me want to go out on the track and try a few turns. The Boba tea was funny stuff! Keep it up Grip, I'm ready for V3!

Gung Ho!
Released in DVD by Gotham Distribution (19 March, 2002)
Average review score:

Well Known Slogan, Little Known HistoryIn 1943 the outcome of WWII was still uncertain. Movies showcasing victories were embraced by the public. This was one of the most unusual. "Gung Ho" (Chinese for 'work together') tells the story of the Marine Raiders who gained a reputation as a deadly, even bloodthirsty, fighting force. Randolph Scott portrays Evans F. Carlson (his, and the names of other real life Raiders are changed here) one of the most unorthodox commanders in American military history. Carlson fought with the Chinese Communist 8th Route Army against the Japanese before America entered the war. He gave his Marines a communist-style political indoctrination combined with unconventional warfare tactics training. This unusually frank film begins with a Marine announcing they are recruiting killers. They get Brooklyn street fighters, hillbillys who have settled family feuds the hard way, social outcasts, and even an ordanined minister. They also get American Communists who declare, "I fought in Spain, I fought in Greece, this fight is all the same, fascism!" In training, Randolph Scott sets the tone by saying "More than officers and men we're going to be comrades!" and instructs the Marines to cast all racial and religious prejudice out of their mind and that while they fight for equality they're going to live it. Further, "bars and insignia are left in the barracks." Their training includes asking a surgeon were best to stick a man with a knife and learning to spit in the eye of the enemy in hand to hand combat. The fact that the real Carlson died in 1946 shortly after the war with his hero reputation still fresh in minds is probably the only thing that saved this film from the Cold War trash bin. Highly Recommended.

aural assaultFinally, the most decadent American rock stars (who havent OD'ed, yet) come to DVD with a blistering early show. GWAR is THE answer to the 1980s. Violence, hate, filth, murder... just the tip of the Anarctic iceberg. This DVD allows you to sit, in the comfort of your own home, on your couch, making out with your hand for hours as GWAR tears you apart...aurally.

The Ultimate Jib Flick of the '02-'03 seasonOnce again, Jonny D. manages to create the vid that wins Freeze Magazine's Best Jib Flick award. And for good reason, too. There's a solid sountrack attached to some sweet skiing of Boyd Easley, Jon Olsson, Candide Thovex, and Tanner Hall. There's no doubt that Tanner has compiled one of his best rail segments yet, and with sweet footy of Jon Olsson in the USFO halfpipe and hitting backcountry...oh, baby.
From what I gather, there is a bonus extra if yuo get the DVD version. I think they're funny interviews of the skiers in the film. This got a score of A- in Freeze's award competition, and considering that out of 10+ skiing videos, only two got anything over a B+, that's saying something.

Hardware Music Videos: Hip Hop, Vol. 1
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (25 March, 2003)

amazingThis DVD is great. The sound and picture quality are both high and when they say uncensored they mean it. If a volume 2 came out tomorrow I would snatch it up. The only drawback is that some of the songs are a little outdated for 2003, but still worth the money.
