Atomic Kitten: Right here and Right Now
Atomic Kitten is a great pop band from UK. All three girls are talented and beautiful. They are deserved support from their fans. I'm one of them. I found them when I was accidently to see their DVD music concert at my friend's house. Next day, I have ordered for my own. It's been played many times since I got it. The DVD audio and pictures are very good, high quality, that are one of the factors I expect in DVD format. I wish American music channels would show more UK pop music rather than airing American punk, hatred, heavy rock musics on TVs. That is a shame for us and creates bad influence for kids and adults. Please stop those music on TV and show more gentle and sentimental music.

Way fun
I've been dying to get my hands on this DVD for a while now, and when I finally saw it, I was very glad I did indeed get it.
The main focus of this DVD is their April 2002 first UK tour. You get to actually sit back and enjoy a full show, whit costume changes, and the refreshing thing is that these girls can really sing! They do very well live.
I enjoyed the one hour behind the scenes as you get to watch Natasha, Jenny and Elizabeth rehearsing, being silly, doing their makeup, and being really tight friends. The are teh kinds of girls who are purely wonderful and not catty and snobby like other pop stars.
I usually preffer rock music and soundtracks, but i cant resist the Atomic Kitten charm.
Great buy!

Beethoven Cello Sonatas Nos. 1-5 / Rostropovich, Richter

Immaculate
Sublime. Nothing else could properly describe this union of giants.

Unbeatable Beethoven Cello sonatas on DVD
The Beethoven cello sonatas that I go to most often, other than these also include Fournier/Kempff, Casals/Horszowski and Tortelier/Heidsieck. Each has something to offer which the others don't. Richter/Rostropovich's 24 bit version (Philips) has excellent sound, but the one that remains the most appealing despite it's poorer sound, is nevertheless Casals/Horszowski. Needless to say, they are only CDs. Here we have Richter or Rostropovich playing right in front of us and each one of them deserves a 5 star if not more, and we have the two put together.

The sound of this DVD is somewhat like their Philips version before it was remastered into 24 bit ( but they are from different performances). It is anyway good enough for the enjoyment of the music, for both the cello and the piano part.

The picture quality is even better, much better than most contemporary colour versions. The angle of view is the best one could hope for, with the two sitting at a right angle, back to back while the camera shoots from 45 degree from the air covering both Rcihter's hands and Rostropovich's at the same time for most of the time. The speed of filming is however, slow for fast actions: whenever we have a vibrato, the vision of Rostropovich's left hand is for sure blurred and likewise for the pianist. The quality is otherwise very good. Also note that there arn't too much bodily movements especially from Rostropovich.

Richter has been hailed as the best pianist of the century somewhat like Oistrakh has been called the king of the violin. Whether this is justified is besides the point, as there are plenty of evidence here to support such an arugument. Suffice to say that Richter has won the admiration of even Michelangeli. As for his Beethoven, I however invite readers to go to Rachmaninoff where the pianist interprete Beethoven more from a composer's point of view, where his major concern was music, instead of just from a performer's point of view where the interpretation is somewhat confined within the four corners of the score, however colossal his technique might be or however deep his interpretation may be. The tradition of great musicianship is also better preserved in Rachmaninoff too. As far as phrasing or even music is concerned, I also invite reader to listen to Horszowski as well. I wouldn't say he is better than Richter, but he certainly has something to offer which could not be seen fron Richter. But the latters were of course CDs only.

Beethoven Violin Concerto & Handel Violin Sonata & Shostakovich Four Preludes / Leonid Kogan
Released in DVD by Emi Distribution (06 May, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Leonid Kogan
Average review score:

There's No Devilish Edge, But...
Those who come with a mind for Kogan's devilish edge trying to compare him with Heifetz or the like, they may well be diappointed: they may have to look for it somewhere else, probably only from his CDs.

Here Kogan plays a number of short pieces, with composers spanning all over Europe playing some German, French, Italian and even Spanish music. The longest piece is Beethoven. It's amazing that after having heard dozens of renditions of the same piece, one stil finds his Beethoven fresh and new and that is despite the fact that the French orchestra doesn't quite give him due support.

Needless to say his Shostokovich is unrivalled. It's so amazing that he managed to play Handel nearly as good as Adolf Busch; and his Debussy almost as good as Thibaud and that was despite the fact that Thibaud himself was a Frenchman with the widest imaginable exposure. No wonder Thibaud handpicked him from among his fellow Russian violin pupils.

His Bach is not the best one available on DVD, but the French audience seemed exceedingly delighted by it. Hopefully, viewers would find the same. The last three pieces i.e., Brahms, Pagaini, Falla are instead the most intriquing of them all, fully demonstrating Kogan's musicianship. The bonus shows us what an excellent chamber musician Kogan was. Emil Gilels's sister, Kogan's wife though not equally as impressing as either her brother or her husband, does help to bring out Kogan's finest qualities as a musician.

There is one thing that is quite extraordinary. We don't always have an appetite for Heifetz, nor Menuhin. One may even get tired of hearing Oistrakh. This may not be the case of Kogan. I have watched this DVD 3 TIMES in a go and still left with an urge to go back to it, and that is despite of the fact that Kogan doesn't have any outstanding accompanist like Emil Gilels or Richter or the like! Marvelous, isn't it? I suppose that is the very essence of musicianship.

As to the picture, the worst part comes from his Beethoven where shiny part comes as "blackouts", sometimes a big as a fist and that come a dozen times or so. The grain and resolution of the film isn't quite the best. But the picture is generally quite pleasing as the photography is excellent. There are moments we can actually see how fleshy his fingertips are and how excatly he effected his vibrato etc. The sound is even better than the vision.

My favorite virtuoso of all time
Kogan!!! Kogan!!! Kogan!!!

Mr Kogan was not merely a technician nor is his playing in anyway cold. How do I find the words to describe his magic? Effortless technique, the ability to speak with every note, flawless intonation, expressive phrasing and vibrato, a great sence of timing, delivery of music with finesse and advanced musicality, and sensitivity and emotion in the most intimiate moments.

Music included on this DVD includes:
->ANDREI MYTNIK PIANO FILMED IN LONDON, 26 MARCH 1962

1)HANDEL VIOLIN SONATA IN E MAJOR, HWV373
2)DEBUSSY BEAU SOIR
3)SHOSTAKOVICH 24 PRELUDES, OP. 34 NOS 10, 15, 16, 24
->ORCHESTRA NATIONAL DE L'ORTF, LOUIS DE FROMENT CONDUCTOR
4)BEETHOVEN VIOLIN CONCERTO IN D MAJOR, OP. 61
->FILMED AT THE ORTF, PARIS. 12 MARCH 1966
5)BACH SARABANDE FROM PARTITA FOR SOLO VIOLIN IN D MINOR
->NAUM WALTER PIANO FILMED IN PARIS, 1968
6)BRAHMS HUNGARIAN DANCE NO. 17 IN F SHARP MINOR
7)PAGANINI CANTABILE
8)FALLA SUITE POPULAIRE ESPAGNOLE

->BONUS/LEONID KOGAN AND ELIZAVETA GILELS-KOGAN VIOLINS FILMED IN PARIS, 21 NOVEMBER 1963
9)LECLAIR SONATA FOR 2 VIOLINS IN C MAJOR, OP.3 NO. 3

The video is in black and white, the sound quality is good but the quality of recording at the time dulls the tone of his DelJesu, even so the man simply plays like he is on fire. I would recommend this video to any violin student without hesitation especially because I believe this is the best video you can get of the Beethoven Concerto.

If you like this DVD make sure to get the VHS made by Kultur called "Interpretations by Leonid Kogan" The VHS and this DVD are absolutely essential to any violinist's library.

5 Stars all the way!!!

Bob Marley and the Wailers: The Legend Live

Incredible Show
This is a great live performance that was well filmed and remastered. I highly recommend it for any Bob Marley fan. If you have never heard or seen a Bob Marley concert, you are missing out and this would be an excellent place to start. Bob Marley is one of the greatest musicians ever and one of the best live performers ever (in my opinion) and this concert is proof of that. Bob lives on in "The Legend Live". Additionally, it not only includes the 20 tracks that another reviewer wrote about but it also includes a 21st track "War/No More Trouble". Also, it includes a 51-minute documentary on Bob (primarily an interview with Bob) and another extra with great fan commentary about Bob and his message and music.

Live at Ground Zero
Released in Audio CD by Deep Rush Visuals (30 September, 2003)
MPAA Rating:
Imagine Redd Foxx with a dirtier mind and a cleaner mouth, and you’ve got a bead on Bobby Rush. The energetic Jackson, Mississippi-based entertainer has been the King of the Chitlin Circuit for years. It’s a title he’s won with vaudevillian instincts, horny showmanship, spot-on ability as a singer, harpman, guitarist, and bandleader, and a knack for writing tunes that brim with playful down-home wit. This set captures the astonishingly youthful and vigorous Rush in concert for the first time in his 50-year career, strutting like a peacock with his bevy of booty-shaking dancers through crowd-pleasers like the lusty "You, You, You" and hits like the double-entendre laden sexual plea "Chicken Heads." Both discs--one a DVD of this show recorded at the Clarksdale, Mississippi club Ground Zero, the other a music-only CD--cover a strong 11-song set. The music disc has two bonus tracks: the Rush favorites "Sue," a playful tale of sexual initiation, and "That Thang," a slinky funk update of Willie Dixon’s classic "Same Thing." If you’ve never seen Rush’s singular and engaging stage shtick live, there’s now no excuse. --Ted Drozdowski

Live at Ground Zero
This is a killer dvd that accurately shows what goes on at a Bobby Rush show. Bobby has done the world a public service by releasing this dvd and cd. It is a definate bargain, and I strongly recommend it for all blues fans. Get your copy now, while you can.

Bobby Rush: An American Original?
Bobby Rush's Live At Ground Zero has a collection of all original tunes performed at a club in Mississippi. Mr. Rush delivers a muti-dimensional show that could lift the spirits of a dead man. The DVD companion is a must see: Mr. Rush compliments his musical and singing talents with an ensemble of beautifal dancers whom bring-to-life the stories in Bobby's songs. These songs' messages manage to lift spirits despite the worst circumstances that life offers, in a unique and genuine way. Bobby Rush's originality transcends geographic boundries, he is simply without parallel.

Body by Jake - Strength Training 101 for Women
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (07 January, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Learn the basics of low-weight, high-repetition strength training with Hollywood trainer Jake. In this 40-minute video, Jake instructs carefully and comprehensively while a young, fit, female exerciser demonstrates each exercise. The clear instruction is aimed at beginning level, with exercises for all major muscle groups. This is an instructional guide rather than a workout--if you want to use it as a workout, pause the DVD to complete your reps before going on to the next exercise. You'll need dumbbells, a barbell, and an adjustable weight bench with leg curl and leg extension (all the items in the Body by Jake equipment set). Since no alternatives are shown (e.g., dumbbells instead of barbell for several appropriate exercises), this DVD seems more appropriate as an instructional guide for working out with the Body by Jake equipment (or equivalent) rather than for general weight training at home. --Joan Price

Best Strength Training Tape For Beginners on the Market
I pre-ordered the VHS tape back in early December. I received it a few days ago. I am totally impressed. I have a weight bench, dumb-bells, a bar and a heavier weight set at home. I use my light weight dumb-bells all of the time, but I always wanted to use my work bench and heavier weights for sculpting, but was afraid of hurting myself from improper form. This tape makes it so simple. Jake walks you through each procedure and explains exactly which muscles are being worked. Most tapes perform the procedures in such a fast pace that I was always skeptical about even trying them out. Jake explains, as a model performs the procedure with proper form and technique in a slow smooth pace. Well, I'm on my way to the body I know I was meant to have. Thanks Jake for making a tape for beginners like myself.

Body by Jake Strength Training 101
I found this dvd to be extremely valuable when it comes to learning how to use weights. Jake's instruction is clear and very helpful. I was always nervous about using weights at the gym, now I have enough confidence to give it a try. I always wanted to use weights at home, but I never knew what I needed. Now I do. I know how much to lift, how many times and the best part is now I know how to sculpt the body I have always wanted.

Ceres, Celestial Legend - Requiem (Vol. 7)

an absolutely MUST HAVE series, the best dvd yet!!
The first episode in this dvd is extremely sad and the second is also extremely hard to watch, as you anticipate what is going to happen, but it's a must have for me, as I've totally fallen for this series and all the plot twists and character changes are very fascinating. It gets more interesting, and we learn some new stuff about Ceres' past. I can't wait for the last volume to come out! Being a veteran of Anime, I can assure you, you won't want to miss out on this outstanding, breathtaking, and heart-wrenching series. Enjoy!!! =)

Best DVD in the series
Disc 7 is undoubtedly the best, and the gloomiest, DVD in the series, along with the final disc 8. Without ruining the heart-wrenching plot twist for you, the viewer will be witness to one of the saddest single episodes in any and all anime. A very much ignored character up until this DVD, that character's death will resound the ultimate gloom throughout the series. Make no mistake about it - you will shed some tears, if not through your eyes, then at least pouring of your heart. Touya also ends up seeing stars, but his death won't matter much after the first death in the DVD.

In any case, Ceres has and will develop itself to be one of the best drama anime ever. Sure it tends to go melodramatic at times, but the overall plot and character development package is one of the best, if not the best, in the genre among anime. If you've enjoyed the first 6 DVDs, then you'll absolutely love this and the final DVDs.

The Chieftains: Down the Old Plank Road - The Nashville Sessions

musical history
If you have seen the PBS pledge show and are wondering what's on this DVD: It's musical history, plain and simple, along the lines of "Will the Circle be unbroken" and Donal Lunny's "Bringing it all back home" in a perfect production on stage. Sadly it was Derek Bell's last concert but what a concert it was! All the Nashville stars (incl. Earl Scruggs) stood in line to play and record with the Chieftains (see also the 2 CD set). Green grass meets Bluegrass - awesome!

Very Entertaining
Nicely done! The Chieftans: Down the Old Plank Road - The Nashville Sessions has just the right mix of "guests" and provides an entertaining concert. A smattering of interviews and a real nice mix of music make this a must buy for those interested in Celtic & Bluegrass music.

What a superby Love Story with a happy ending. It takes a drastic move in one's life to recognise what is important and this came across in the movie. I will be watching this DVD time and again.

Loved It!!
I first saw this video on BET a while back, and loved it. When it came out on video, I didn't get it until I could and now watch it whenever I want to. You have this woman who is a stockbroker with no other life, who has a heart attack and told to go recuperate, which she does to a lady who used to take care of her down in North Carolina, and she ends up meeting her nephew, who is renovating her home. At first, there is no common interest, but as time go on, they fall for each other, and know that something has to give. I won't give up all the details, but check it out.

Dance of the Drunk Mantis
Released in DVD by C.A.V. Distribution (11 March, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Woo-ping Yuen
Average review score:

Great Knockoff
Basically the same as Jade Claw, Snake In The Eagle's Shadow, and Drunken Master, just with drunken styles and Preying Mantis. Though the film doesn't have Jackie Chan or Billy Chong, Simon Yuen is in it and plays the same character he's known for. The DVD quality is pretty good for a video transfer but the subtitles are sometimes cut off on both sides due to the full screen-only playback. There are a few trailers for other films also.

Unbelievable Shizznit my neazy
WHen he first got drunk I literally exploded in my pants. There was a scene where he got wasted and beat up this guy and it was great. I paused the movie to take a shower and when I got back I watched it naked. THen I turned it off and turned it back on, and put a towel on.
