Navy Seals: America's Secret Warriors

MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Navy Seals-America's Secret We

keep your cash
The Navy SEALs-America's Secret Warriors DVD is exceedinlgy disappointing. The information and facts the guy standing at the fireplace recites are elementary and old to anybody who knows anything about SEALs. THe footage is very outdated and its authenticity dubious. The piece on the Stoner machine gun, however, is good. The DVD could elaborate a lot more on BUD/S, SpecWar tactics, and counter-terrorism ops, and actually include commentary from actual SEALs. Don't be fooled by the "4 in 1" boast-have of that is a simple little quiz reviewing the most rudementary of SEAL facts the DVD just told you. Go down to your local Navy recruiter and watch a video there. Maybe you'll get a poster and keychain too.

Worst DVD I've ever seen
As stated in my header, this is the worst dvd that I've seen so far. I was expecting something similar to the documentaries on the Discovery Channel or History Channel, but this really came up short.

For starters, the film is dated. It appears that most of the footage in this dvd was taken from over a decade ago, and it makes it almost painful to watch.

The picture quality is also lacking. There are an overwhelming number of static lines that are present. The quality looks worse than most VHS cassettes. Basically, I felt like I was watching a film that might be shown in a poorly-funded elementary school.

Lastly, the actually information being presented was not interesting. I love the SEALS, and can't resist watching a documentary whenever I flip to one on TV. I bought two of these dvd's, one for a friend, and was really excited to watch it. Now, I'm too embarrassed to even give my friend his copy. The stories, presented as an amazing 4-in-1 DVD, are flat out boring. There is no cool training shown, although it briefy touches upon how dificult it is to become a SEAL. However, this plotline is overshadowed by the fact that all the instructors and candidates are sporting Tom Selleck shorts from his Magnum P.I. days.

The film is just bad and dated. It should never have been transferred to a DVD. It doesn't take advantage of any of the positive technology that DVD cinema has to offer. My advise: Wait for a new SEALS DVD, because the Discovery Channel and History Channel have both done much better jobs of showing how amazing the whole SEAL operation is.

Excellent overview of SEAL history, training, tactics!
This is a two-part video--one part on SEAL history, training, and tactics, with some actual footage of some Special Warfare operations...from UDT Frogmen at Normandy Beach, to SEAL snatches of the enemy in Vietnam, and SEAL participation in Panama, Granada, and the Gulf War. The second part is an in-depth presentation of the role of the Stoner 63A light machine gun in Vietnam...with its capability of giving a platoon of SEALs the equivalent firepower of an infantry company! Awesome firepower demonstrations are supplemented by the expert testimony of retired SEAL Lt. Cdr. Michael Walsh on the Stoner's capabilities (for more first-hand accounts of such action...the reader is heartily referred to Walsh's book: SEAL!).

Cheating Las Vegas
Released in DVD by Brentwood Communications (22 March, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: James Wood and James Woods
Average review score:

This isn't what I thought it would be...
I thought this would be a movie starring James Woods about cheating casinos. It is, in fact, a boring documentary NARRATED by James Woods about mostly very high tech methods used by cheaters and casinos to perpetrate and detect cheating. At least they could have shown low-tech cheaters in action so you know what NOT to try in Vegas :-) This one's going on the closet shelf (or in the trash). A very disappointing DVD.

wow..all gamblers should see this....
I didn't think that these kind of movies were still around or still made for that fact. The movie is like two hours long and shows both sides of the casino. People cheating and the people trying to catch them. Lots of great stories but I wouldn't try to act any of this out.

Hotter Than Hell Erotic Horror Movie Set
Released in DVD by Brentwood Communications (15 January, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)

Not Even Worth This Low Price
This is incredibly stupid. None of these four movies is either scary or erotic. Although it might seem like a good deal to be able to get 4 movies for 10 bucks, the movies in question are of such low quality that it is the same as burning a ten dollar bill.

Skip buying this. I would advise against seeing any of these films.

Buy it for Stephanie Beaton, if nothing else
Stephanie Beaton ("Unnatural Born Killers") is a real feast to the eyes (she played a woman detective in the first two movies of this 4-pack and boy, was she hot). Other than that, don't expect too much on the "scary" side. Just be happy with lots of skin and gore.

Moon of the Wolf

MOON OF THE WOLF
This movie is CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For being one of those 1972 horror classics, it definitely isn't! It is so boring and the wolf doesn't come till the end of the movie. In the future I hope movies never ever turn out to be as bad as this one!

Great Time Passer
I originally owned a two-pack VHS of both Moon of the Wolf & Scream of the Wolf, and I recently got both of them on DVD. Moon of the Wolf is a great film to pass the time with, even if the monster looks very similar to Lon Chaney in the "Wolfman". I recomend this movie to anyone who is a fan of early horror movies like myself.

White Fang to the Rescue
Released in DVD by Brentwood Communications (30 October, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: David Heavener
Average review score:

WHITE FANG TO THE RESCUE
This DVD cover is missleading!!! This has nothing to do with the "WHITE WOLF WHITE FANG" The white fang in this movie is a German sheapard -- that people in the movie call a wolf! Get real there is a big difference in a Wolf and a dog!

The people that put out this DVD should not claim it is "Based on the novel by JACK LONDON WHITE FANG TO THE RESCUE"!

TOO BAD IT IS NOT LETTERBOXED
This is not a bad Spaghetti Western with snow, not bad for the price either, however this is a pan and scan print of obviously a 2:35 to 1 aspect ratio, but most of the action is central to the screen, so not as many "talking noses" per say....The print was grainy in some parts but oddly adds to the European feel of the film. Maurizio Merli does a credible job as the good guy and fahter figure to the boys and dog (German Shepard or Alaskan Huskie) and the heavy is played with his usual serving of ham by Henry Silva and a small supporting role by Irish star turned Italian film catylist Donald OBrian. Also for Spaghetti Western, the film is quite mild and very little violence or adult situation. The excellent score is by Carlo Rustichelli who scored several films for the late Gioseppi Collizi such as Boot Hill and Ace High. It has a few extras, for some odd reason an Little Rascal short and a dvd dictionary. I would like to see Lucio Fulci's White Fang and its sequel released as well on dvd...Overall this is not a bad family film

Bustedd/Young & The Naked
Released in DVD by Brentwood Communications (24 April, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Bustedd and Young & The Naked

Double Feature Only Half Satisfying
You'd think that a double-feature set with the above titles would be a major score, right. Well, not exactly. Yes - Young and Naked did have women who were 1)naked and 2) young(ish). So there you get what you paid for.

Bustedd (get it, 2 D's?) on the other hand falls way short of the mark. Breast size seems to be an afterthought with this picture, as were editing, on-screen talent, locations, costumes and anything else associated with this particular visual medium. In addition, the director has the audacity to acutally take FOOTAGE FROM "YOUNG AND NAKED" and PUT IT INTO "BUSTEDD"! Like I wasn't going to notice? I wouldn't say "Hey, those girls look awfully familiar...I wonder where I've seen them before" when I have watched the other tape.

As far as I'm concerned - Young and Naked was decent. Locales were good, the girls looked good, it was shot pretty well, and some of the fantasy sequences were erotic. My only beef is that the director didn't let the sequences play out long enough; one minute you're into some native american shaman sequence - then a cut to some girl on the beach. Sure, i knew I wasn't going to get "The Godfather" or "Gahndi" - but I wasn't expecting a jump cut, MTV style product either.

"Bustedd" is merely an afterthought. Use the DVD as a coaster, hanf it from your car mirror, or find another DVD and make a set of Elton John-esque glasses out of them.

Crime and Passion
Released in DVD by Brentwood Communications (30 January, 2001)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Starring: Crime & Passion and Lauren Hays
Average review score:

Not the same movie described in the Leonard Maltin review
Viewers should disregard the Leonard Maltin editorial review above, which is of a different movie. This one concerns the daughter of a bounty hunter kidnapped and taken to Guatemala. The film tries to blend noir elements with "after dark" - style soft core, but with only partial success. The unrated version I saw does contain some hot footage, especially the love scenes with Lauren Hays and Nikki Fritz. Overall, worth renting but not purchasing.

Real Heroes In Action

Grossest DVD Ever!!!
I bought a used copy of this dvd today, and plopped it into my dvd player as I sank on the couch. This is the most horrific, brutal, and most violent thing I have ever seen. They show real uncensored police footage along with fires. This is a really disturbing video. I recommend you don't watch this if your the least bit squeemish. Nasty! 2/5

Rock Survivors

Another "Metal DVD" put out for quick cash
This DVD is billed as a behind the scene and live performance compilation. Well, it should not be surpising that all this DVD contains is big names on the cover. The bands "are": Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Yes, Scorpions, Lita Ford, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Poison, Megadeth, Extreme, Winger, Nelson, White Lion, Trixter, King's X, Ugly Kid Joe, Anthrax, and Slaughter.

Now after reading the list to see Megadeth, Trixter and Poison in the same line and you are continuing to read this review, just be forewarned that this is ONE DVD that it claims to have all those bands and you "...See Them on stage, behind the scenes and in candid interviews."

The cheesy description should tell you what you're buying, "Through the decades rockers have come and gone, but these are the legends - The Bigest, the baddest, the best - the ROCK SURVIVORS!"

Savage Pampas
Released in DVD by Brentwood Communications (03 July, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Hugo Fregonese
Average review score:

CURIOUS WESTERN SET IN ARGENTINA
One of Robert Taylor's last pictures, SAVAGE PAMPAS was directed by Hugo Fregonese, who made such westerns as APACHE DRUMS, BLOWING WILD and, in Europe, one of the WINNETOU westerns in 1965, which alos dealt with Apaches on the war path. Here, he sets his action in ARgentina in the 1870's and casts Taylor as a cavalry officer and Ty Hardin as a revolutionnary, facing Indians and rebels.

Visually, the film is rather curious. The soldiers' uniforms are a mix of mexican uniforms, french legion uniforms and gauchos' large chaps. The Indians look like Apaches and the white rebels siding with them, more or less, look like mexican bandits.

The story revolves around an officer concerned with the lack of women in his fort which causes his men to defect to the Indians, who offer them women, and a revolutionnary who joins a group of white women bein brought to the fort by Taylor and his men to prevent the troopers from defecting. On the way, Taylor and Hardin get to know and respect each other, while Indians and rebels prepare to attack them. Cornered in a deserted village, soldiers are under heavy attack by the Indians, but Taylor manages, first, to get help, and second, to perform a deed (which I don't want to explain here) which will with any luck save the troopers...

The film was shot in 70 mm, but sadly is presented here in its Pan & Scan version. Master and MPEG2 compression are not particularly good, but this DVD remains quite watcheable, especially for western and/or Robert Taylor fans.

Besides, its price is quite reasonable, so don't hesitate to take a ride in those SAVAGE PAMPAS.
