WWE - TLC: Tables Ladders Chairs
Released in DVD by Sony Music (Video) (05 February, 2002)
MPAA Rating:
This production by the World Wrestling Federation opens with snazzy computer graphics of chairs and tables, specifically the type preferred as weapons by particularly unruly members of the professional wrestling fraternity. But a very serious-sounding narrator explains that this is not a documentary about furniture, but a look at three particular tag teams: The Hardy Boyz, the Dudleyz, and Edge & Christian. In interview segments, the wrestlers essentially step out of their ring character and talk about growing up, their ambitions to become wrestlers, and their love of "sports entertainment." Once it's sort of established that these guys are all human beings, the fun begins, and ladders, chairs, and tables are gleefully deployed as weapons in the ring. The real stars of the show are the table-smashing degenerates always referred to as "those damned Dudleyz." Capping a frenetic montage of "Bubbuh Ray" Dudley putting a variety of opponents (and even a female emergency medical technician) through folding tables is a masterpiece of Dudley sportsmanship: helpless and elderly female wrestler Mae Young is dragged from her wheelchair and treated to a vicious "flying table drop." Warnings abound that the participants are professionals, and no one should even think about trying any of this craziness at home. --Robert J. McNamara

The Twelve Chairs
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (09 May, 2000)
MPAA Rating: G (General Audience)
Director: Mel Brooks
Starring: Mel Brooks
Mel Brooks's 1970 comedy (his second work as a film director) is based on an old Russian folktale, and was first filmed in Yugoslavia in 1927. The story concerns an old woman who reveals on her deathbed that she has hidden jewels inside one of 12 chairs that were formerly in her home but are now scattered. Ron Moody plays the poor Russian nobleman seeking them, and Dom DeLuise is his rival. After Brooks's wild and even controversial first film, The Producers, The Twelve Chairs seems relatively tame; but it is still a funny and slightly exotic work owing to its director's longtime interest in classic cinema. --Tom Keogh

Tiresome
Several reviews I've read about The Twelve Chairs claim that it is an undeservedly neglected Brooks' masterpiece. Since I've enjoyed other films by the wacky Mr. Brooks, I decided to add this DVD to my collection. Big mistake! I can assure you, it is a deservedly neglected Brooks' production (that is far from a masterpiece). I would describe the unsubtle attempts at humor as manic and forced. I see little need for anyone adding this disc to their collection, unless they must have everything produced by Mr. Brooks.

A Mel Brooks comedy definitely worth your time!
The Twelve Chairs doesn't have as many belly-laughs as The Producers, but it is witty and quite entertaining, and is a worthy runner-up to that earlier classic. Like his later film To Be or Not to Be, Brooks mutes the comedy a bit and reveals an emotional side to the story. It's a welcome change of pace from films Brooks made in between these two which relied a lot on slapstick and sexual humor. In fact, it's okay for kids to watch, as there is no swearing, nudity, violence or sexual situations (which shows you what a filmmaker can do without going for the cheap laughs). All of the actors are wonderful, especially Dom Deluise, who is flat-out funny as the priest gone crazy with greed. Brooks' part in the picture, though not much more than a cameo, is among his best comedic acting roles, in my opinion.

Classic
This funny production of post revolution Russia depict in a very humoristic way the changes (or lack of thereof) in Czarist Russia turning into the Soviet Union in the early 20'

Mell did an excellent job in playing and directing the movie,

Mandatory to any comedy buff
