DC Movie Reviews

i was there
Quick OpinionThe concert was aired here months ago on Swiss TV channel SF2 and still, I think I'll buy it as soon the zone 2 encoding DVDs hits the stores. I am sure that the DVD would aslo include some kind of bonus features.
AC/DC rules.
The Saturday that changed my life foreverIt was a Saturday evening in late 1977 and I was settling down in front of the family TV to watch the Sensational Alex Harvey Band live in concert on the BBC, only to find that Alex Harvey had died two days previously. So, instead, they put on a concert by this obscure band from Australia of all places (remember this was 25 years ago and I was a quiet 14 year old growing up in sleepy Worcestershire in England) who noone had ever heard of, let alone seen live.
And there they were: a bare torsoed Bon leering at the crowd, a manic schoolboy Angus foaming at the mouth, strutting and duckwalking and sweating and sweating and, well you know the picture so well. Then there were the back three, Malcolm, Phil and Cliff who just got on and did their jobs...and if you look at the instruments they played on the Stiff Upper Lip tour last year...yes, those are the same beaten up guitar and bass that they used in 1977. (Well OK, Cliff had just joined so I think he was playing a Fender rather than a Musicman Stingray, but Malcolm's guitar is definitely the same...you get the picture)
And what did this band do? They played songs the like of which I had never heard, with a power and intensity that I had never seen (and have never seen anyone equal since) As I write, I'm shaking just remembering it all now.
Angus didn't have a wireless rig at that time, but just marvel at how he moves around the stage...and is walked through the audience on Bon's shoulders playing an outrageous guitar solo on an incredibly long version of "Rocker".
"Problem Child", "Whole Lotta Rosie", Hell Ain't a Bad Place To Be": we're so familiar with these songs now and they still give me that shiver down the spine when I hear them today. Do you remember the first time you heard these songs?
Exactly, and then... "In the beginning, back in 1955, man didn't know 'bout the Rock 'n' Roll show, and nobody jived..." Yes, they played "Let There Be Rock"... and then they finished with "TNT" with Angus punching the air in time with the title...
This concert is my Dallas 1pm. I remember it like it was yesterday, not 25 years ago.
I haven't seen this concert since that first (and only?) showing on TV 25 years ago, but because the BBC put it out at the same time on FM radio I was able to tape it, and that is what has probably helped me remember so much about it. I played that tape to death.
The irony is that this is a Zone 1 DVD, so I can't play it on my European Zone 2 DVD player, and there don't seem to be any plans to release this DVD in the UK any time soon: You Americans are very, very lucky.
I guess I'll have to spend the $75 to get my player chipped. That's expensive, but for this DVD, it will be the best $75 I'll ever spend.
To all of you reading this review, I urge you to buy this DVD. And when you watch it for the first time, remember where you were when you first saw or heard AC/DC.
This DVD is a precious record of what was their finest hour - at the height of their abilities, at the height of their passion, and at the height of their desire to conquer the world.
The World's Greatest Band
Ride On

Serious and silly all in one....
Goofy ape movie is alot of fun!!
OH MIGHTY GORGA...YOU HAVE ARRIVED ON DVDThe second feature is One Million AC/DC written by Ed Wood!! Another pitiful movie that makes Gorga look like a classic well made film!! Wall to wall nudity and inane dialogue. My opinion on this is not good. I didn't really like this film and cannot understand why Something Weird Video put this R rated film on with the G rated Gorga.
Loaded with trailers and lots of extras, check this out if you want to see a couple of movies that will make your jaw drop. Highly Recommended!!

ROCK AND ROLL AT IT'S BEST!!
AC/DC's Early Nineties Castle Donnington Concert Rocks!
Wow! !! what a dvd!Angus and his guitar sound great he never misses a note.. exept in Let there be rock when his guitar sound flickers on and off when hes doing a signature move.. The set list is great. The four songs that are performed better then in the othere dvds are Thunderstruck, Back in Black, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, and Highway to Hell. The bonus features in this dvd are very interesting espacially if you are a die hard fan. The 5.1 audio mix is amazing i can even here the echos and such of the croud and amps making you feel like youre there at the concert. If youre even a tiny bit of a fan buy this dvd.. if youre a huge fan buy all three of them!!!! Thats what i did!

Thank God for these Guys!
Fantastic!
Free At Last the movie is a MUST OWN for all DC Talk fansThe story line was not "scripted" but it was more of a reality/documentary style with interviews of Mike, Kevin, and Toby (and others) interspersed with behind the scenes footage of the Free At Last Tour.
The visual quality of the movie was OK (being a series of video taped scenes from the tour). The editing was absolutly fabulous. I cannot think of another movie of this genre that I enjoyed more.
It truly is a MUST SEE dvd. Heck, for $...

Restoring my faith!I will agree with a previous reviwer that the bonus footage could have been better. What's there is good, but it's only 10 minutes long. I also like the song selection. Sure all the usual suspects are included but I love that they played What Do You Do For Money Honey and especially Up To My Neck In You. Thanks for keeping us on our toes guys.
What the band really needs now is a DVD or 2 DVD set that contains footage and interviews from their entire career. There's got to be a TON of stuff out there that we rabid AC/DC fans would love to see. Oh well, maybe sometime down the road. For now, this one rocks. If you're a fan of the band I highly recommend it.
Huge concert, huge bandThe climax with the development of the concert is growing with each minute one of the greatest moments is when the band plays The Jack, you have to see it.
Good for the band and I hope to see them on the road early.
Better then No Bull and LIve at Donington( in some ways)

No Bull - No SoundHowever, and there is always a however, I found the Sound Quality during the concert portion of this DVD to be lacking. I have Surround Sound, so I had fairly high expectations when I plugged this DVD into my player. Although the sound is in Dolby Digital 5.1 I found the background noise a little much. When you move up a chapter and play the video, the sound is excellent, so perhaps I am asking to much, but I was disappointed in the quuality of the DVD sound during the concert itself.
This DVD also has the "Making of Hard as a Rock", which I found interesting, although a little more technical information would have been nice. If you are a fan of AC/DC like myself, it is certainly worth purchasing, my only complaint is the sound.
Classic Concert but not so good 5.1 audio mixThe video footage was done in a movie like film/camera and this provides a much better viewing experience. My only complaint is the sound mix. I had first watch this concert on VHS and I had high expectations regarding the DVD-Dolby Digital reissue. The sound is not always as clear as I had wished for. There are times when I felt the stereo mix was much better than the 5.1 as the band and voice came across much better. The 5..1 mix has too much audience noise and this drowns the music a bit.
Nevertheless, is another nice addition to a hard rock - AC/DC collection.
About the "5.1" sound mix.....

High-fashion heroine a feast for the eyes in high-tech animeThe animation style and design date this unmistakably back to the 1980s (the first two episodes were done in 1989 and the third in 1991). The character design is quite stylized, with angular facial structures, small mouths and huge eyes, but boasts some intriguing and original touches. The girls' eyes are invariably encircled by long black lashes and contain painstakingly detailed oval pupils. The bodies are all long-limbed and slender. The backgrounds, while not as detailed as we've come to expect from anime, are rendered boldly and in bright colors. New Yorkers will enjoy the glimpses of Times Square, Central Park and Coney Island. The jazz-inflected score includes a couple of catchy songs sung in English. Overall, it's not the most compelling storytelling we've ever gotten from anime, but it does add up to a charming and moderately engaging entertainment, suitable for adolescents and older.
