Best of Def Comedy Jam Set 1
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (23 April, 2002)
MPAA Rating:
Average review score:

unparalleled fun
Great, funny, outrageous.... This set has a combination of both dry and "wet" humor. I am a big fan of black comedy and this is definitely a great set to start with, especiallyl for me. During the time of these acts being filmed I was barely in elementary and was clueless about cable television, so watching this now, certainly takes me back to memory lane of all the things that were happening at that time. Great collection if you want to start your comedy library, no dvd collection should be without!!!

The Best of The Chris Rock Show - Volume 2
Released in DVD by Hbo Studios (02 April, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Linda Mendoza
Chris Rock lives up to his reputation on this second collection of sketches and parodies from his HBO series--he is not only funny, he has a genuine political edge, pointing up contradictions and racial tension in American society. His material ranges from mock investigative reports (including an exposé of racist toys like "Mr. Sweet Potato Head" and "Low Expectations Scrabble") to commercial parodies (such as ads for the Malcolm X Games--"Because being extreme isn't just for white devils anymore"). But his best work has got to be his genuine on-the-street interviews, in which he asks men at boxing gyms to name their favorite white fighter or asks random New Yorkers if black people should receive reparations for slavery. He even goes down to South Carolina to talk to residents about why the Confederate flag flies over the state capitol; he finally gets a number of people on the street to agree to a different flag that replaces the stars in the Confederate flag with the stars of the WB (like Brandy and Robert Townsend). What people are willing to say in front of him is both funny and frightening. Chris Rock makes cutting-edge comedy seem simple; after an hour of this show, it's incomprehensible why Saturday Night Live and Mad TV are so abysmally toothless. --Bret Fetzer

Funny, Funny, Funny
This is great! You will laugh your a** off! Get it! Funny, Funny, Stuff!

funniest thing i have seen in my life
chris rock is the funniest guy ever to graze the earth and the chris rock show is the funniest thing ever if you want my opinion this is a 5 star buy.

Chris Rock Rocks!
Being one of the top standup comics in the world, Chris Rock has proven that he is not another Richard Pryor or Eddie Murphy when it comes to raunchy comedy. Unlike those latter comedians, Rock's appeal with urban and suburban America has made him a popular not only due to his previous work on Saturday Night Live, but due to his stint as host of his weekly cable television show, HBO's "The Chris Rock Show."

"The Best of the Chris Rock Show, Volume 2" is another hysterical compilation of incredibly funny skits and jokes that Rock and other talented writers on his show have given television audiences in the past few years. Using fake recreations, commercial spoofs, and the talents of the ultra-funny Wanda Sykes, this collection will have you on the floor laughing.

Some of the funniest skits on this DVD include "Selvina Delvina," featuring Wanda impersonating a possessive singer who only sings about her man and the "Make You Wait Hair Salon" where Wanda and Chris play the owners of a Harlem salon where waiting is a necessity and the service is slow.

Another funny sketch is "Halle Berry 911" where Rock does a William Shatner-type role as host of a reality-based show (spoof of the show "Rescue 911"). The sketch which shows Berry as a menace to drivers was actually inspired by two automobile accidents she was involved in and ran away from the scene of the accident. I don't think the Oscar-winning actress will find this mockery of her driving skills amusing, but Rock sure does a hysterical job. The "Baby 1 Credit" and the comical driving safety sketch are also added bonuses on this DVD.

This DVD, which comes with bonus material of Rock's version of HBO's "Taxicab Confessions" is also great, although most of the material on this disc is the same as Volume 1. Overall, this DVD is one of the best comedy DVDs to come out in a long time. It's much more funnier than his "Pootie Tang" movie and worth every cent. Born with a gift for comedy, Rock is definitely one Saturday Night Live Alum who hasn't lost his touch. This DVD is a must have for anyone into outrageous, mouth dropping comedy sketches. Highly Recommended!

Best of the Chris Rock Show
Released in DVD by Hbo Studios (07 August, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
One of the brighter lights to shine from the late-'90s Saturday Night Live cast permutation, Chris Rock successfully made the jump to his own HBO series and snagged a couple of Emmy Awards along the way. Part Saturday Night Live and part Arsenio Hall-style show (with a raucous studio audience), this best-of video shows that Rock has definitely grown into his own style and matured as a comedian. The segments from Rock's early shows tend to suffer from that Saturday Night Live malady in which a one-joke skit is stretched out for an excruciating period of time (see: Mike Myers). Rock's penchant for beating a dead horse is most apparent in his parodies of Fox-style reality-based shows ("When Animals Attack in High Speed Chases II"), which are genuinely clever but run on a little too long. However, when Rock sticks to live-action comedy, he proves he's one of the funniest (and most satirical) comedians around, playing with issues of politics, race, and gender mercilessly. Hands down the most hilarious segment is a CNN-style "panel" on the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, hosted by Rock and featuring "Black Guy," "White Dude" and "Sista." Most attempts at lampooning this Presidential faux pas have fallen flat on their faces, but Rock and his cast take no prisoners as they skewer the players, the media, and the "man-on-the-street" mentality surrounding the hype. Other highlights include a male version of "The Rules" as interpreted by Ike Turner, continuing coverage of the rising career of rapper Pootie-Tang and his unique brand of urban slang, and Rock's petition to rename a street in Howard Beach after Tupac Shakur (one of the few pre-filmed segments that keeps its momentum going). Rock definitely proves he's one SNL alumnus who won't be wearing out his welcome anytime soon. --Mark Englehart

Chris Rock is hilarious but this DVD isn't
I personally believe Chris Rock is the funniest comedian ever. I purchase both Vol1 & Vol2 of "the Best of the Chris Rock Show". The 2nd DVD deserves 4.5 out of 5 stars, without a doubt but the first volumne is pale in quality, length & content.

This seems to just be grabs of random pieces of his show and are bar far NOT "the best off". The 2nd volumne has 55mins of skits and then another 45mins of his "Taxi Cab Driver Confessions" which alone almost makes the disk worth the purchase. This disk is just a poor collection of skits from the show, then 2 skits from the Taxi Cab. If you want a good Chris Rock DVD, buy volumne 2, but pass this one up, its not worth it, not even with a less than (...) pricetag.

Chris Rock Video is tops in Comedy
There was no pain watching this video. I enjoyed the "pundits" on Monica and Bill. Take a chance and get your funny bones ready for a tickle. Chris Rock is going to bring the jokes and the laughs!

Never seen an episode
I was in for a treat. This was al new Chris Rock of me. And I ate it up. Chris Rock is simply the best comic in a one man show. I don't have cable TV, and if I did, I would never be home to watch it, so with this being my first exposure to the Chris Rock Show, no wonder it is the hit it is. Great work.

Best of Dancesport: Best of Ballroom
Released in DVD by Madacy Entertainment (12 December, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Average review score:

grotesque
this is anything but the "best of dancesport." I love to watch ballroom dancing. Its poetry in motion. The makers of this video somehow managed to make it all look smarmy and unseamly. The set designs are awful and the makeup is atrocious. The dancers themselves are creepy. Don't buy it.

Very disappointing
The dancers are superbly skilled -- no question there -- but this film is neither entertaining nor informative. There is virtually no unifying theme other than the dancing itself. It is not about competition, nor is it instructional or emotionally compelling, so what is the purpose of this production? If it's meant to be about partner dancing, the emotional connection between the couples on the dance floor should be given great emphasis. However in this film, that connection is lost -- completely.
It displays the dazzling technical skills of the dancers, but what good is that without communicating feelings. The problem seems to lie within the choreography of the individual routines. Although the dancers' lines match beautifully, it's like watching two solo acts performed simultaneously. Compare the performances in this film with those couples doing competitive ballroom or figure skating as shown on TV...you'll see what I mean.

Better off with something else
This DVD has a number of very skilled ballroom champions showcasing different dances. I guess the DVD isn't bad for a beginner who wants a no-nonsense review of what each of the dances look like. But for someone looking for more, the performances lack the energy and technical proficiency of champion level couples performing in a competition setting.

The set and the editing are also amateurish. Many times the camera angles changes and you are stuck with a view that is obscured by a flower pot or other ridiculous pieces of the thrown together scenery.

The music is not good and often times it seems that the music that is on the tape is different from what the couples were listening to live.

All in all disappointing.

Berlioz - Symphonie Fantastique & Les Nuits d'ete
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (25 May, 1999)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Cyril Diederich
The Symphonie Fantastique is one of those pieces that become a staple in every orchestra's repertoire. Musicians love to play it and audiences love to hear it. The way in which the piece shifts between quiet yearning and wild abandon never fails to be exciting--in short, it's really hard to ruin the audience's enjoyment of this piece. That said, this is a relatively enjoyable performance. The conductor certainly knows where to make things happen and the playing is mostly good. This group, the Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra (which looks pretty young), doesn't always play together, but they do play with spirit. The only things one may find unfortunate are some balance problems. First, this performance seems to follow a trend some conductors have established of boosting the violins way up in the mix while practically silencing the woodwinds. Second, it's a shame that now even French orchestras have trumpet sections that are intent on obliterating the rest of the group. The accompanying song cycle, Les Nuits d'été, is performed quite well. Ms. Pollet sings with a lot of soul, and the orchestra accompanies her very sensitively. The overall sound is a little rough and tinny, but just a little. The visual presentation is somewhat bizarre; from a frightening extreme close-up at the beginning to a number of questionable choices about where to point the camera. Somehow, however, it makes the whole thing kind of interesting to watch. --Seth Krimsky

This This the worst quality Video I purchased ever.
Picture is dark and sound is terrible. I would not justify to sell this concert even in VHS.

Drab colorless DVD
Dreadful sound. Dark shaded picture. A disservice to Berlioz

Audio muted and not clear
Worst audio I ever heard!!!!!! This DVD should be recalled !!!
